Are conservatives boycotting Disney now?

Disney World was able to stay open and has moved corporate employees out of CA to FL. They need FL to survive. I hope Disney comes to its senses, sorry libs you are losing.

To the contrary, if DeSantis & company pull the rug out from the Reedy Creek Improvement District, taxpayers will need to pay $1 billion to cover the services that Disney now covers.

And that’s in addition to the $1 billion in bond debt the district currently holds.

Not to mention, it’s almost certain that Orange and Osceola Counties do not currently have the road maintenance crews, fire fighters, police officers, etc. needed to service that area. Currently, Disney has a security crew that provides some law enforcement, while leaving arrests and other matters to local authorities. The counties will have to cover all enforcement now.

Good luck with that!

On the other hand, they can tax the hell out of Disneyland. All of the incentives that local governments have to give in order to land large developments like Disney don't exist and the infrastructure already there is too expensive for Disney to threaten to leave.

Good luck with that. Disney could just shut down for 6 months, not pay any employees and blame the government. How do you think that would go over?

There would be a shareholder revolt given the amount of lost revenue, but they can try it.

I think you and I are the only people on this thread who understand what Reedy Creek is or what it does, and how it benefits both Disney and the surrounding counties.

😎 And thank you if you were the one who pointed out that Orlando and Osceola are both majority Democratic. I knew that but hadn’t properly applied it to this situation.

That was me. No problem!

I don't think many people are mad about internal emails sent to employees denouncing the education bill. Many parents are mad about the video with the producer bragging about adding queerness to children's programming. Disney had built up a lot of trust among parents for producing wholesome entertainment suitable for innocent children. I would imagine they want to send a message about that. I know people who have canceled Disney plus. I never subscribed but at friends' houses I've seen their new stuff and frankly it looks depressing. If I'm putting on a movie for my little children I want it to be joyful.

What programming is depressing? Encanto? Turning Red?

Well there is already a lot of push back against the crazy right in the schools. Not many people agree with your world view.

How, precisely, is "producing wholesome entertainment suitable for innocent children" incompatible with adding references to gay people?

I don't expect you to answer, as these questions often are ignored. But it's an important question, and deserves a response.

Good lord. Get a room, you two, so you can properly service each other.

DeSantis was catering to conservative boomers with the Dont Say Gay bill. He needed something that stroked their bigoted fears enough to move them past how many of their peers he killed during covid. Boomers in Florida did not like having their hip replacement and doctors appointments delayed because the hospitals were constantly at capacity. DeSantis needed to put his Captain COVid in the rear view mirror. The best way to endear yourself to old bigoted boomers is to go after gay people.

Disneys market is not boomers. It’s millennial parents and their zoomer kids who both deeply dislike bigoted boomers. Bigoted bible humpers in fly over states don’t spend $$$ at Disney. They may buy knock off disney crap at Walmart or thrift stores but they aren’t booking the Grand Floridian.

OP - your bigger problem s that your FIL is a nast bigot. Why would you want your kids vacationing with a nasty bigot anyway? Use this as an opportunity to go on a vacation that you want with your nuclear family leaving the bigot behind.

Bigot? Pot, meet Kettle.

Maybe if you left your woke echo chamber, you would see that "not many" people is actually 50% of this country.

Mostly agreed, that post was trollish for no reason. Also, the bolded part is inaccurate- one of the amazing things about Disney is how they are able to appeal to such a wide spectrum of people, including by income. Families with not much money may take 6-7 years to save up for a trip to Disney, and may not stay at the Grand Floridian, but they absolutely go and make up a significant part of the clientele. It may be only once during their kids childhood, unlike a richer family from the DC area who may go every 2 years, but there are literally tens of millions of people in that group, and even getting some of them just once is major revenue for Disney.

You believe that 50% of the country opposes, for example, gay marriage? Care to supply a poll that supports that?

Do you really think he actually hates gay people? Or is just a cynical bastard who sees political benefit in this? (Which is, in some ways, worse than actual hatred.)

Yes I do. You can't do this much harm to gay people without actually hating them or seeing them as less than.

Right. As of June 2021, 70% of Americans supported gay marriage. https://news.gallup.com/poll/350486/record-high-support-same-sex-marriage.aspx

Oh and that even includes 55% of Republicans.

The issue isn’t about gay marriage. I suspect you know that. It’s about exposing children to topics around sex and gender ideology. Gay marriage is not a problem.

Since when has Disney been making sexually explicit programming?
