LCPS School closed for a week

I am imagining an OB practice where all the doctors take off an entire week at the same time because "its their leave and they can take it whenever they want!" Or if all the trash workers in a town did this? Or if all grocery stockers and cashiers decided the week of Thanksgiving is really stressful and they would rather just take leave then instead! The "teachers" (if that is even what they are) on this thread are so ridiculous it is not worth even resonding to them.

And I definitely don't pay attention to "I have family abroad lady." She was mouthing off on DCUM all last year too during distance learning, bragging constantly about how little she was working and how much she was traveling.

No. We recently got an email that so many people had already requested those days AND subs wouldn’t pick them up that *new* leave requests for those dates wouldn’t be approved. But ultimately they couldn’t staff it. Subs don’t work high volume days either. And you actually can’t just deny everyone leave. It’s a benefit of your job.


Eh, I think the teachers ultimately screwed themselves here. It will just become harder and harder in the future. My friend who teaches in HS said a bunch of his coworkers deliberately took leave AFTER the email as a F-U to admin. Very mature.


It’s our leave, we can do whatever we want with it.


That's not how leave works in jobs where people have to cover for you. Do you think nurses and doctors are all taking off wherever they feel like it or is there a level of coordination so that the hospital can still run?

The idea that you can just take leave whenever regardless of the impact is such entitled behavior coming from the adults that we can't expect the kids to be any better.

For example, I work for the federal government and my leave is restricted the days before and after major holidays. My supervisor can say no to my leave request if there won't be enough staff left to cover.


This is why schools have SUBSTITUTES.

I very rarely had subs growing up in New England. Especially in HS where work was harder and grades counted more. Were teachers just more motivated and conscientious about keeping their travel to school vacations and summers?

I can’t imagine getting a couple extra days off (Nov 1,2,4) and thinking “ok I’m going to take advantage of this to take a random week-long vacation - screw the students!!!” To the poster who wanted to visit her mother, she has plenty of long weekends, Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week in the spring, and ALL SUMMER to visit her. I mean come the F on.

How do you expect teachers to know how many other people took that day? Seriously! I didn’t even take them but there is no way for us to know when we put in a day how many other countywide absences there are. It’s not like you log in and it says “22 more people can take this day before we are out of subs.”

I think teachers were more respected when you were growing up. Teachers then were able to truly teach and not do all the ridiculous amount of extras or emailing parents around the clock. Clearly you are not a teacher so F off! it's a lot of extras and where are the raises???. Interestingly enough your post demonstrates my point about a lack of respect for teachers nicely.

This. I've seen some of the emails my SIL receives as a teacher from parents. They're absolutely ridiculous.

Parents respected teachers more back then as well. There's NO way my mom would have ever allowed me to not do my homework and then sent a note the next day that basically said she deemed the assigned work unimportant and chose to let me do other things instead.

Also, when I was in school, teachers were able to discipline. When a kid was acting up in class, the teacher didn't tell everyone to ignore the kid like now. No, she sent the kid to the principal's office. Heck, back then even saying "Brandon, this is your warning. Please stop and pay attention. The next time you go see the Principal" was enough to get the kid to self-correct. It's like kids never get sent to the principal these days. Ignoring bad behavior and trudging forward with the lesson doesn't correct the bad behavior.

During the first week of November, students already had off Nov. 2 for Election Day, Nov. 4 for Diwali and Nov. 5 for virtual parent/teacher conferences. Now, the division will also close on Nov. 1 and Nov. 3, giving students the whole week off.

He’s giving a different reason but it’s the same deal: they can’t staff it with subs and bus drivers not wanting those days either. It’s a staff shortage issue.
