Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

I don't understand why Fed people complain about this. You know what you signed up for when you work for the Fed. That's expected.

Career fed, and no it is not what we signed up for. I did not go through my first shutdown until 2013, when I had already been with the government 10+ years, and then we just had a delayed paycheck. The 2018-2019 shutdown for me was a real wakeup call. People work for the government because we believe in the mission and are willing to take a significant paycut in exchange for security and stability. If security and stability are gone, and quality of life is gone, and the mission is gone, what is the incentive to stay? No wonder we are having trouble recruiting and keeping younger workers.

That's what's going to happen now, though.

I get that it's a little unsettling, but in reality, most government employees (not contractors) are getting (delayed) paid vacations. Some will have to continue to work, again with delayed pay. Yes, it stinks. Is it worthy of the rending of garments and all-around doom and glom displayed on this thread? Most certainly not.

Hi. We all know you’re the same person posting these “optimistic” takes over and over. Frankly, it’s a weird way to troll, but whatever. But could you try to hide it a little better? Thx.

Word on the street is a week or two shutdown. We have an Agency meeting at 11:00.

Our contractors will still work and still get paid.

Agreed. The democrats look bad here

They had a deal with the debt limit, now a handful of Rs are pitching a fit. How do the Dems look bad?

unless you work in the speaker's office, you have no way of knowing how long the shutdown will be

Why do you think that? The military can’t quit and sick out/strike would get AWOL which can lead to PRISON TIME. And many believe in their mission. It’s literally evil to have them serving and in harms way and delay their pay, visceral anger here.

I would look to TSA air traffic control for salvation, they can protest work without pay without risking prison time. But they took almost a month last time

Exactly, there is more public visceral anger about military going without pay.

The public doesn’t matter. Republicans have blocked promotions and appointments, send the military off on fake wars, the masses will just say “they will get paid eventually, they chose to serve”.

Well, the only—and I mean the only—issue the GOP has some leverage on is the border. But I doubt it’s enough to avoid a shutdown. It should be a short one, though—maybe five days.

Can confirm HHS sent its email.

ACF hasn’t received theirs yet.

I wouldn’t use “McCarthy” and “smart” in the same paragraph. 🤣

Slightly more likely than not that there will be a shutdown.

Ignore the trolls. Even the Freedumbs have said this is not the Dems’ fault.

You must live in a narrow tunnel if you think that.
