Girl Raped at Rockville HS

No. My 14 year old daughter has been instructed ad nauseum by me to not mingle with 18-22 yo men at the mall or movies. I'm in FFX County and our schools put out a video series helping kids identify sex trafficking in our schools and community. She has no business talking/socializing with older men. I do not want her in class socializing with 18-22 year old men either. If you do not understand this then I cannot help you.

DP. Oh boy. I have a 14-year-old too, and we clearly disagree on child-rearing philosophy.

They were not in classes together. The males were in the METS program. They were just in the same building. It's getting really tedious hearing people say "why were they in classes together??" They weren't.

I don't really understand what the students' age has to do with it. There are plenty of 17 year olds in high schools and there's nothing inherently different about them being potential rapists vs 18 or 19 year olds. Technically students of any age in a high school could be potential rapists. Nothing magical happens when someone turns 18/19/20 that makes them more likely to rape than a 17 year old. My son will be almost 19 when he graduates because his birthday is at the beginning of September. Would you consider him to be someone who should not be allowed to attend school with 14 or 15 year olds?

Was this situation a terrible one? Of course. But let's focus on the issues that matter--such as security in schools vs. focusing on that there are some male students over the age of 18 in high schools. Because what you're really saying is that immigrants from Central America who are currently in US high schools are all potential rapists just waiting to pounce on your child.
1) Your son is about to graduate, not just getting started.

2) If age has nothing to do with it, then why to we bother to have statutory rape laws? I guess anyone who's comfortable with their HS daughter dating should be fine with them dating a man of any age? No? Then this is why. This is not just about fear of more rape. There is a big difference (or should be) in the maturity level of a 14 year old and a 21 year old, and there is a lot that goes along with that.
My son is currently in elementary school.

I guess you are against letting your teenage daughter go to the mall? The movies? The grocery store? There are men over the age of 18 in those places with areas for a rape to potentially take place. Clearly dating wasn't part of the equation in this incident, although the investigation has yet to be finalized so who knows, but that's an apples to oranges comparison in any event.
My DD knows that if a strange man approaches her at the mall or at the movies, she is to run or scream. This girl was at school. She tried to fight. She tried to scream but nobody heard her.

People can't see past their hysteria to understand actual facts. They go along with whatever best fits their narrative.

How do you know they were not in any classes together? Did you read the link about the METS program? Some of the METS kids take classes with the regular HS kids.

Gosh... I'm not a Trump voter but with this level of PC censorship I certainly understand some of their frustration.

Not the PP, but what exactly do you tell your 14 year old?

I've been teaching my kid for years that at the mall or at the movies (then later at bars) you stick with your friends and keep an eye out for each other.

I tell her that if she's by herself she needs to be aware of her surroundings, park where there is light and where people are around.

But at school, there is some expectation that she will be safe from rapist predators. Obviously you feel that there is an equivalent threat at school as there is running on Rock Creek Trail at midnight.

Also in high school you don't have bathroom buddies where as in real life you are most often with friends and other people are everywhere. During classes, hallways are a lonely place to be...

So the crux of the issue is how to ensure common spaces like bathrooms are monitored for safety purposes. The legal vs. illegal, males older than 18 in schools hysteria is really not the issue, is it?

Not sure if this has been shared already but here is info MCPS provided regarding frequently asked questions, video of the press release, and video of the meeting last night: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/incident-information/

Parents have already pulled a couple girls out of Rockville HS to privates with openings. The abandonment of once high quality public schools is continuing.

Plyler v. Doe

Isn't a bit rich that lefty wackjobs like our superintendent cite federal law requires them to give kids an opportunity to learn...

...in sanctuary schools-cities-counties that are actively skirting federal laws?!?!

If a kid shows up with papers called ICE. They don't call ICE because they want the $$$$ and they're following their demented lefty marching orders.

without* papers, call*

You want MoCo to call ICE every time a homeless child registers for school?

Absolutely

This. METS kids are not segregated entirely. They take some classes with the general population Iike PE. Also, you can only be in METS for 2 yrs, so after that youre placed in the regular classroom, possibly with 14 yr Olds depending on your progress. I think MCPS should really consider taking out all the METS kids from the12 High schools and put them in a single facility elsewhere.

What will they do if something bad happens to them at the private school?

And yet some people actually wonder why our public high schools can be dangerous places for our kids.
