Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

I don’t think it will last long though. Not with the military not receiving pay, that should force the politicians to put something through soon. My humble opinion.

I just want to warn you all that I will be emptying the fridge on Friday afternoon, so take your rotting lunch boxes home with you.

You work in an office still?

Nope. Still plenty of time to get this worked out so everything is open for business on Monday.

Why do you think that? The military can’t quit and sick out/strike would get AWOL which can lead to PRISON TIME. And many believe in their mission. It’s literally evil to have them serving and in harms way and delay their pay, visceral anger here.

I would look to TSA air traffic control for salvation, they can protest work without pay without risking prison time. But they took almost a month last time

Exactly, there is more public visceral anger about military going without pay.

We are sort of okay financially assuming this doesn't go on forever, but I work in a job to which I have given my heart and soul for much less money than I made in private practice, and shutdowns make me feel profoundly unappreciated. I'm a true believer in government service (which is stupid) and this genuinely sucks.

Right there with you.

Yes. I was so angry for this reason the first time

I know the feeling. But before and after the last big shutdown we heard from people in the communities we serve telling us to hang in there. It helped us remember that we’re not unappreciated, we’re just getting messed with by a tiny group of people.

Geez we have become so soft as Americans. Your life isn't going to end and you aren't going to be on a bread line. Also, you shouldn't be doing the job if you need to feel appreciated. Do you think the President, any president, feels appreciated? Do you think anyone working at Target as stocker or at Amazon on the warehouse floor feels appreciated?

Stop worrying about what other people think. Our country was built by people who were made of sterner stuff. Eye roll....

Tell me again why Trump had all of those appreciation rallies?
And, PP, you really don’t know how people will be able to manage a financial hit.

Our country was built by colonizers who felt justified in genocide. Not that you care about what I think, of course.

DP. I don’t think that most voters care that much about that either.

I don't understand why Fed people complain about this. You know what you signed up for when you work for the Fed. That's expected.

Career fed, and no it is not what we signed up for. I did not go through my first shutdown until 2013, when I had already been with the government 10+ years, and then we just had a delayed paycheck. The 2018-2019 shutdown for me was a real wakeup call. People work for the government because we believe in the mission and are willing to take a significant paycut in exchange for security and stability. If security and stability are gone, and quality of life is gone, and the mission is gone, what is the incentive to stay? No wonder we are having trouble recruiting and keeping younger workers.

This! I work in cybersecurity and the youngest person on my team is 39. We have a hard time recruiting because private industry is much easier for cyber and it pays twice as much. Half my team are boomers delaying retirement.

These fed people don't know anything about cybersecurity. Contractors do all the work. That's why they delay retirement because why kill the golden goose?

McCarthy is putting a lot of pressure on Biden to meet with him. Looks like Biden will cave and this whole thing will be resolved tomorrow. Don’t see how democrats hold the line on no border policy changes. Smart move by the Speaker…
