I'm not 12:56, but I am here because I am a public health professional who sometimes does communication during epidemics, and I am interested to see how people are reacting and what they are saying. I sometimes jump in when the misinformation gets to be too much and I feel like I shouldn't let it stand. Essentially, the greatest threats in an epidemic are false information and fear. And here we are, with people trading in false information (via stuff they find on Twitter) and fear. I get it, its kind of exciting and interesting to speculate and think about worst case scenarios. But truly, it isn't harmless. It makes epidemic control harder. That's why I'm here.

If you are interested in how people are reacting and what they are saying why are you posting messages to discourage talk? I am not talking about factual counters but statements like this:

"This thread just appears to be people looking for reasons to panic . . . . Unless you are going to Asia and/or even flying a long domestic flight to an international city like LA, move on with your 9-5 and your carpools to soccer."

Oops--sorry. Just realized you were not 12:56, who was the poster who posted the above statement.

Apologies!

Where will they be “quarantined”? In their homes?

I'm giving you the sum total of my knowledge. Feel free to research it yourself. And consider the idea that any quarantine is better than none -- sure I'm sure you'll yell if it's a home quarantine and that person's home is in your community, but would you prefer that they went back to work on Friday, commuting, going out to lunch, going to the grocery store after work? But I have no idea -- maybe it is a quarantine at a hotel by the airport in LA and then they fly out of there to their hometowns in 14 days.

For better or worse, Twitter is the source of information for this. Also Weibo, but I can't read Chinese so stick with Twitter.

It seems that you're concerned that China's spotty record of disseminating information is problematic. You're not the only one.

This thread is entertaining. I find it hysterical that people in the US are buying masks. I think most of you simply enjoy the panic. I work in a hospital setting with some of the sickest patients admitted. I’m exposed to all kinds of shi7 every day. I wash my hands. And I don’t kiss patients on the mouth.

Seasonal flu kills something like 30,000 people a year in the US. Flu B is everywhere right now. Yet, you are worried about Wuhan? A virus that causes mild to moderate symptoms in the majority of people affected?

People create drama when they are bored.

A casual glance at this forum and others on DCUM shows that people are plenty concerned about flu.

Laugh away.

Got my flu shot as soon as it was available like I do every year, wash my hands thoroughly especially when I come home and have my kids do the same, but do we trust that it’s so mild actually? I don’t really trust China to report the truth of things and honestly, quarantining a city of 11 million for a mild illness seems like a wild overreaction, but like a more normal reaction if indeed it’s less mild than we’ve been told by them.

There are confirmed cases in California and other states. It is not contained only to China.

That said, it's also a major current event. You don't have to discuss it if you don't want to, but why is this different from any other thread on this site? Or anywhere on the internet?

You're too cool for the coronavirus. Fine. The rest of us are interested. (Some of us have family in/near Wuhan, but I assume that most posters on this thread don't.)

Exactly.

But it’s not just “interest.” You’re discussing it from the worst-case scenario POV, suspending all reason. And all that does is spread unreasonable fear and stress. For example. There are two cases in CA. One in OC, one in LA county. Well I live in Southern CA. There is ZERO reason for me to be personally worried. And btw, lets say I get it. Well, so what? I get sick. Just like I would with the flu. This is NOT Ebola virus, folks.

This is exactly the problem. It will be worse than Ebola.

What nonsense. In what way are you proposing it's worse than Ebola? It's not as infectious as Ebola, nor nearly as fatal. You are another Chicken Little.

China has the flu too, but they have never quarantined a city for the flu. They are for this. And it isn't because a bunch of soccer moms on a messageboard in the USA are scared. It's because their doctors and virologists who study this told their government lock up a whole province of China, no matter what the economic impact is on the country.

So yea, flu kills more (so far), but a little bit of open-mindedness about what is going on in the world might help you get past your cocktail party chatter of "the flu is worse"...

More false information because you are getting carried away?

The good thing about Ebola is that it's not very infectious. Unlike the coronaviruses.

I think you hit the nail on the head. If this was something that originated in, say, the UK or even Saudi Arabia, there would not be much concern. But China? You can't trust them to tell the truth.

Part of that is not wanting to be politically exiled by the rest of the world.

Are you joking? Ebola is terribly infectious. This new coronavirus we don’t really know but I don’t think it’s anywhere near as catching as Ebola.
