There are confirmed cases in California and other states. It is not contained only to China.

That said, it's also a major current event. You don't have to discuss it if you don't want to, but why is this different from any other thread on this site? Or anywhere on the internet?

You're too cool for the coronavirus. Fine. The rest of us are interested. (Some of us have family in/near Wuhan, but I assume that most posters on this thread don't.)

Exactly.

Doesn’t Wuhan have some kind of experimental laboratory where this may have started?

There is a bioweapons lab in Wuhan. Yes, there are conspiracy theories out there that it and not the seafood market was the source. The theory is an accidental leak from the laboratory through an employee or similar.

It's not a "bioweapons lab". It's has a BSL-4 ( Biosafety level 4 ) laboratory where they can conduct research on various viruses like SARS or Ebola. I think there are a couple of BSL-4 labs in Frederick MD and one in Richmond in case you are wondering.

Thank you.

Where will they be “quarantined”? In their homes?

But it’s not just “interest.” You’re discussing it from the worst-case scenario POV, suspending all reason. And all that does is spread unreasonable fear and stress. For example. There are two cases in CA. One in OC, one in LA county. Well I live in Southern CA. There is ZERO reason for me to be personally worried. And btw, lets say I get it. Well, so what? I get sick. Just like I would with the flu. This is NOT Ebola virus, folks.

Thanks. I wondered about this it was initially reported it would be just an airport screen----which of course isn't enough because of the long window of being asymptomatic but still contagious.

Two reported cases doesn't mean that there's only two cases of it. A lot of older Chinese people will turn to Chinese medicine to alleviate their symptoms before they even consider Western medicine, so there could be more cases than we know. This is true for elder Chinese in SoCal too.

Hopefully, Alaska.

I'm not 12:56, but I am here because I am a public health professional who sometimes does communication during epidemics, and I am interested to see how people are reacting and what they are saying. I sometimes jump in when the misinformation gets to be too much and I feel like I shouldn't let it stand. Essentially, the greatest threats in an epidemic are false information and fear. And here we are, with people trading in false information (via stuff they find on Twitter) and fear. I get it, its kind of exciting and interesting to speculate and think about worst case scenarios. But truly, it isn't harmless. It makes epidemic control harder. That's why I'm here.

I personally find where and how this is spreading fascinating. Likewise, how concern is spreading and ratcheting up. It is not often that one gets to see a previously unknown physical network and the parallel attitude network in action as they reveal themselves.

Sure beats Meghan and Harry.

If you are interested in how people are reacting and what they are saying why are you posting messages to discourage talk? I am not talking about factual counters but statements like this:

"This thread just appears to be people looking for reasons to panic . . . . Unless you are going to Asia and/or even flying a long domestic flight to an international city like LA, move on with your 9-5 and your carpools to soccer."
