Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

Anonymous
I think we're all a bit burnt out making it across the line to the new fiscal year. It's like asking a bunch of accountants if they want a paid furlough after April 15.

I don't understand why Fed people complain about this. You know what you signed up for when you work for the Fed. That's expected.

Career fed, and no it is not what we signed up for. I did not go through my first shutdown until 2013, when I had already been with the government 10+ years, and then we just had a delayed paycheck. The 2018-2019 shutdown for me was a real wakeup call. People work for the government because we believe in the mission and are willing to take a significant paycut in exchange for security and stability. If security and stability are gone, and quality of life is gone, and the mission is gone, what is the incentive to stay? No wonder we are having trouble recruiting and keeping younger workers.

Who cares whether they knew? Locking out workers is a crap way to be an employer. If you don’t want to hear about it, head over to Politics and get out of Jobs and Careers.

These things can be true at the same time:

1. Federal workers are being treated disrespectfully by some clownish elected representatives. Feds deserve better and should be allowed to vent.

2. While the shutdown will gravely impact certain families without economic cushions, all-in-all, it's not the end of the world.

- Not a fed. Husband is a contractor who will be out of work and won't get paid.

Amongst a number of truly asinine comments about how feds both suck and need to suck it up, this stands out as one of the dumbest.

However, I guess you get the government you deserve and this is case in point?

It's not like this is an inevitable feature of government, or even US government. The first shutdown was in 1981 (Reagan) and they've only become long and frequent in the past few years.

Our leadership told us that we should have been fiscally responsible and have money saved for something like this. Super helpful.

I think that means people are in the office frantically preparing everything for a shutdown. I know this is true at my office.

i "think" they mean lots of cars were there -- because everyone is preparing to shutdown.

there are about 5x the number of people who have already driven to the office today than are normally here on any day of the week. this is in a garage where i generally get "my" parking spot on autopilot.

This! I work in cybersecurity and the youngest person on my team is 39. We have a hard time recruiting because private industry is much easier for cyber and it pays twice as much. Half my team are boomers delaying retirement.

I have a meeting today to begin shutdown closure.

Have the optimistic posters changed their minds? We all now think there is a shut down?
