Mom of Magruder victim is interviewed. Supports SROs in schoools.

My heart breaks for this mom and family. I can't fathom what they are going through right now. And what angers me is just seeing the interview with our County Executive acting smug and knowledgeable about how to keep schools safe. He thinks he knows better than the people who are actually in the schools and I despise him for that.

No, they are metal, just like regular guns. Just unassembled.

No, they are metal, just like regular guns. Just unassembled.

And with no identifying marks such as serial numbers.

What a stark difference from the family making the obscene gestures coming out of the courtroom. Such a nice family, beautiful child. I pray he fully recovers.

There are some people out there making guns on 3D printers, but they still generally have metal parts. Not actually different that a lot of guns you can buy off the shelf; metal detectors still pick up Glocks, even though they've got non-metal frames.

Interesting that the parents of DeAndre Thomas chose to conduct the interview from their attorney's office. Signalling a law suit?
Also, based on the appalling behavior of the shooter's family, I wonder if their are concerns for the safety of the Thomas family.

It’s a devastating interview. It made me cry.

And it makes me so much more angry that there is this MCPS PR troll in here trying to spin, spin, spin to absolve MCPS, McKnight and the BOE of any responsibility.

And it makes me angrier to be reminded of the callous press briefing provided by McKnight where she went to thank every person in county government before even mentioning this poor child.

And I am livid that the police chief followed that by insinuating that he refused to cooperate after he was shot.

I am so deeply disappointed and disgusted with this county, I just don’t have any more words.

I hope that they do.

I don’t know why they couldn’t do something like make a PA announcement that says they are going to dismiss by individual classroom and teachers should release students one by one and students should leave belongings in classroom. Then have the officers waiting in the hallway to nab him as he comes out. If he hadn’t already grabbed a hostage, seems like the thought he was clear and would not have grabbed a hostage on his way out.
I assume the teacher at least texted his specific location in the classroom so the swat team knew where to look and aim as they entered—but of course the kids didn’t know that.

They couldn't do that because, hey, he had a FIREARM and they didn't at that time know what the threat to everyone might be. Really. I am amazed.

+1 Thank god ^PP is not in charge.

So sad that such a beautiful child is fighting for his life when he went to school for an education. How can he possibly feel safe enough to walk into Magruder or another MCPS high school again? MCPS truly failed to keep him safe. It was only a matter of time someone used a gun in an MCPS school because there is no deterrent or security.

MCPS always waits for a child to be harmed before doing anything. One child dead and one child shot this month. They are only now reviewing safety protocols.
