Not a lottery school. A school that offers a lottery to all interested, high-achieving students. This new system reflects a public education system designed to provide rigorous educational opportunities to the broadest number of children possible, not to admit students by IQ contest.

I thought tj was supposed to be a form of special education for the highly intelligent?

You thought incorrectly. Here is the mission statement:

“The mission of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is to provide students with a challenging learning environment focused on math, science, and technology, to inspire joy at the prospect of discovery, and to foster a culture of innovation based on ethical behavior and the shared interests of humanity.”

I was actually thinking of the purpose on the virginia DOE website

https://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/governors_school_programs/

Governor's Schools give gifted students academic and visual and performing arts opportunities beyond those normally available in the students' home schools.

Spot on! In constantly saying "It's not about who's right or wrong, it's about who pulls the strings" - this poster reveals his/her true face. This is the mantra of all authoritarian leaders worldwide.

Well, let’s see some Asians wrest control of the School Board and the county government on the back of their very positive, big-tent message that an almost entirely Asian magnet school with next to no black, Hispanic or poor kids is something that should be everyone’s top priority.

Ok, first of all, learn how to spell - this is probably your first language, so you should be at least a little better at it than us for whom this is a second / third language. It's spelt logorrhea.

Second, the reason our message is big-tent is because, unlike you, we have a modicum of respect for the people you claim to be saving. Unlike you, we're not automatically assuming that they cannot compete and need quotas. Before you had your go at dumbing down education, they filled at least a third of competitive spots in schools and colleges when they were allowed to compete.

Third, look to AOC, and understand what she means when she talks about the scarcity mindset. There are 5 specialized stem schools in NYC and she's talking about making sure there a lot more, while you are planning to de-specialize the ONE solitary specialized STEM school there is in this state. We say build/create more schools like TJ, pay teachers more, make Virginia the place to move to for a good education.

I don’t see more magnet schools that only increase the opportunity gap as a good solution. The TJ crowd really could not care less about those who get left behind in FCPS. They can’t be allowed to set the agenda. Their values are cut-throat, elitist, and inequitable.

What is wrong with more magnets? Not everyone has an interest in STEM.

I'd say a solution is much more rigor, much more testing, and homework in elementary. More academic competitions too. Make it cool to succeed academically. Plus with more rigor, there's less need to go outside of school for a quality education.

It's obvious from recent posts that this racist anti-asian poster is not a concerned parent - this is a local politician / wannabe politician who's looking to score brownie points with the people who are funding him/her and is testing out talking points on us. He/ she couldn't care less about URMs or the electoral base - only about who's funding him / her for the local elections. We have to get more involved and highlight the racism that is on display.

That is an incorrect hypothesis premised on faulty assumptions. Go back to your rhetorical lab and see if you can do better. Meanwhile others will continue to work towards greater educational equity in FCPS, despite your silly efforts to make yourselves out as victims.

OMG I was right! Really hit a nerve there

Ok, so since you're working towards greater equity, why are you against paying teachers more and building more specialized stem schools?

We are part of the community as much as anyone and will continue to work towards educational equity and fairness for the benefit of everyone in FCPS. Please take your silly virtue posturing elsewhere.

PP is a creepy local politician - I can't believe I actually thought his/her BS about wanting more equity was real, and expended effort engaging. He / She doesn't care one bit about anybody - this is grist for his/her fundraiser.

More like a swing and a miss on your part.

Paying teachers more is a good idea; cannibalizing FCPS with more magnets is not.

Indeed - how exactly would FCPS be cannibalized with more magnets?

I just couldn't figure out how some of the people I knew could support the Republican party. I had actually stopped talking to a few of them. I know now. I still can't vote Republican. Too much invested in getting Trump out. However, I am on guard now. I feel assaulted by the racist, Asian hating rhetoric of cynical, opportunistic Democrats on this thread. Especially when they espouse equality and act so holy and anti-racist. All they care for is to appear woke while furthering their own self-interest. Hypocrites.

Whoever posted a few pages back that whites are all about making Asians pay for the sins of slavery are correct. Well, half-correct. Whites are *also* all about benefitting themselves undeservedly. If for every two Asians gone, they can give one spot to URMs (to make themselves feel warm and fuzzy) and take one spot for themselves - well, that right there is the holy grail.

Also, I can’t believe people are making this into a political issue. Democrats are a snake in the grass, Republicans are a snake in your face. They’re all still snakes
