Discrimination against Asians

You are one who is thinking of a populist message. You don't create/keep a school of excellence by winning a popularity contest or lottery. Doesn't work that way.

This is awesome, thank you. It boggles the mind that people think this is some populist message that vast numbers of voters will get behind. People are really tone deaf.

Very much a lottery school with criteria designed to dilute standards and keep an unprotected minority out. There are ways to increase opportunity in high schools without viciously targeting Asians in a high performing school ranked no 1 in the nation. There are other solutions - you don't want to pursue that because you think the impacted Asian population is expendable, powerless, and to use a previous poster's word - just a distraction. And an intended/unintended side effect is that the proportion of white students increases. I see the evil laziness here....as I am sure you will if you look in a mirror. So please stop the sanctimony.

Not a lottery school. A school that offers a lottery to all interested, high-achieving students. This new system reflects a public education system designed to provide rigorous educational opportunities to the broadest number of children possible, not to admit students by IQ contest.

I thought tj was supposed to be a form of special education for the highly intelligent?

"The outcry against the tests as “longstanding forces of institutional racism” by the National Association of Basketball Coaches is particularly hilarious, given that the real problem most of those coaches are combating is the minimal fake academic entry requirement imposed by the NCAA to help maintain a crooked billion-dollar business scheme based on free (and largely Black) labor. The tests have been tweaked repeatedly over the years to be more minority-friendly and are one of the few tools that gave brilliant but underprivileged kids a way to blow past the sea of rich suburbanites who feel oppressed by them… But, fine, let’s stipulate, as Neon Bodeaux put it, that “them tests are culturally biased.” What to make of the campaign to end blind auditions for musical positions, which the New York Philharmonic began holding in the early seventies in response to complaints of discrimination?
Before blind auditions, women made up less than 6 percent of orchestras; today they’re half of the New York Philharmonic. But because the change did not achieve similar results with Black and Hispanic musicians, the blind audition must now be “altered to take into fuller account artists’ backgrounds and experiences.” This completes a decades-long circle where the left/liberal project went from working feverishly to expunge racial stereotypes in an effort to level the playing field, to denouncing itself for ever having done so."

Just like the American presidential elections was won by a clown who promised his supporters the darndest things. And destroyed his party in the process. Happens.

Thanks for teaching me a new word today. Only good thing that happened from this otherwise useless discussion.

Three cheers to logorreah

She/he spelt it wrong anyhow, so she didn't teach you a thing, just like the educational system she wants to put in place

You thought incorrectly. Here is the mission statement:

“The mission of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is to provide students with a challenging learning environment focused on math, science, and technology, to inspire joy at the prospect of discovery, and to foster a culture of innovation based on ethical behavior and the shared interests of humanity.”

On top of that, they were literally complaining in response to an insightful commentary from a high-standing professional with a vested interest in the subject, by saying that it was too much reading. lol

Ok, first of all, learn how to spell - this is probably your first language, so you should be at least a little better at it than us for whom this is a second / third language. It's spelt logorrhea.

Second, the reason our message is big-tent is because, unlike you, we have a modicum of respect for the people you claim to be saving. Unlike you, we're not automatically assuming that they cannot compete and need quotas. Before you had your go at dumbing down education, they filled at least a third of competitive spots in schools and colleges when they were allowed to compete.

Third, look to AOC, and understand what she means when she talks about the scarcity mindset. There are 5 specialized stem schools in NYC and she's talking about making sure there a lot more, while you are planning to de-specialize the ONE solitary specialized STEM school there is in this state. We say build/create more schools like TJ, pay teachers more, make Virginia the place to move to for a good education.

Being pedantic won't make you any less racist. Change is coming to TJ; it's overdue; and you only discredit yourselves by claiming that enhanced opportunities for others means discrimination against you.

Again, try to make this a winning campaign issue this fall, next year, or in 2023. You won't come close to the School Board, the Board of Supervisors, or any other elected position running on that position.

I don’t see more magnet schools that only increase the opportunity gap as a good solution. The TJ crowd really could not care less about those who get left behind in FCPS. They can’t be allowed to set the agenda. Their values are cut-throat, elitist, and inequitable.

You’re not looking to enhance opportunities for others or for anyone at all. You’re looking to specifically diminish opportunities for us - this is, in fact, your stated intent and you’ve said so multiple times.

Of course, why would you - what you’re about is getting the most political mileage from your moment in the sun. You don’t care a whit about the people who put you in that position of power.

That's the problem. You are only looking at this as an election issue. Not in terms of doing the right thing for everyone. Shame on you!

Being pedantic won't make us any less racist; not being racist in the first place will make us less racist. It's downright offensive how you expect others to pick up the bill for your long-standing legacy of racism.

And I hear your point that it's not about who's right or wrong, but about who currently pulls the strings - I just happen to think that it's a dumb one.
