Me too. They suck. I don't trust them. The whole crew were so rude when we flew with them 2 years ago. I'm a frequent flyer. Never again.

I completely agree that what happened was wrong, but as a frequent flyer you're never going to fly them again? Since IAD is a hub for UA, that means it's often the best choice as far as direct flights. You would connect through another city using another airline and take more time to get to your destination with a greater possibility of delay, just so you don't fly United?

Not the pp but why yes I would.

Do you fly weekly to places only UA goes direct?

I posted this up thread, but you might find it interesting so I'll repost it here.

Interesting- thanks for sharing. United really has gone downhill compared to a few years ago.

Thank you.

Our politicians have all the power to fix this nightmare of a mess. We must pressure them to work for us here.

Of course they are. Even the most basic mommy drama queen tries to spin things in her favor when she's guilty as sin. And she doesn't have billions at stake. The spin machine will be in full force, but United can't win this one. Is United too stupid to realize? Is that possible?

Also not the pp, but I won't fly them again. I'll pay more and take connections, I don't care. I posted earlier that I've 200k miles I had planned to use for a family trip. I'm going to cash those out into gift cards and fly someone else. I am completely done with them.

We should also be raking the unions over the coals here too. It is the CB agreement that permits pilots and cabin crew to live where they aren't based and then fly in for shifts. This clearly places the crew's desires over their customers needs. And, in this case, at the expense of their customer's health and wellbeing.

Yes. We need to start talking about which politicians to target. Anyone in the know?

As a customer, this is not my problem. It's United's job to make their systems work for them, that is their choice.

Continental sucks too. I remember years ago when I had an international flight where the connecting flights were JAL and Continental. The service and experience was night and day.

I had United and Emirates one time. Talk about night and day!. I actually was depressed getting on UA on my return flight. Didn't want to look at the dour faced air hostesses again. They are just so condescending, can't even..

Anyone who takes a plane these days can relate to Dr Dao's story. United has brought this on themselves. I used to fly all the time on United and still have over 200k miles with them. I used to feel a good deal of loyalty towards them, but I am just done, done, done at this point.

pp here. I did too and never had a problem. Have they really gotten that bad?

FWIW, I've flown hundreds of thousands of miles over forty years and have never got bumped from a flight. I can't excuse what UAL did, but it seems to occur to no one in this 75 page thread that none of this would have happened if Dr. Dao had just GTFO the aircraft when asked to do so. What an attitude.

What occurred to me was that I would not have gotten off in this situation. They should have offered higher compensation for volunteers like other airlines do.

Right, but it's all situational. It worked for you that particular day because you weren't in a rush. But I'm sure we've all had times when there is pretty much no amount of money that would allow us to be delayed (not wanting to miss a wedding or graduation or school play). Dr. Dao and his wife were returning from vacation. It was a connecting flight. I'm sure once they discovered their next opportunity to get home was the next evening they determined that the desire to be home was stronger than a pay off. If an airline is going to oversell flights or try to bump paid and seated passengers they need to have insightful staff ready to handle these situations in a way that leaves customers feeling reasonably good (like the PP above) rather than in the hospital with missing teeth. Can we all focus for a moment on the fact that this man is 69 years old?! WTF? And I'm sure investigations will show that he was targeted because of his age and race.

Right but if they bumped up the voucher value they may have gotten other volunteers who had more flexible schedules. But they didn't and they escalated with violence. A series of terrible choices by United.

For me the ultimate insult was when the CEO in the first internal communication essentially complimented employees for following procedure and essentially doing the "right" thing.

I can't think of a more tone deaf or insensitive thing for a CEO to do; if he did not have all the facts, he should have waited until he got them. It insensitivity was compounded when the passenger was accused of being belligerent and disruptive.

The CEO's apology subsequently was just damage control because he realized he had fucked up royally. He should be fired.

It may surprise you. I am no stranger to poor service but this time UA had gone so beyond the pale I rather take a connection than get assaulted. And if they bump passengers off flights so frequently it comes out as a wash.

Emirates is known for abuse and mistreatment of flight attendants. Here are just a few links:
