But it was a total dick move for Youngkin to force it mid-surge.

Why does he want to pick this particular fight with NOVA right out of the gate? He could throw it to local control and move on. Federal disability law is on FCPS’s side. He will lose. And in so doing, he scare a bunch of moms and will remind everyone in NOVA right before the midterms that Rs are morons right before the midterms.

I agree. I've said before that local control is good by me, but saying that and in the same breath telling people they don't have to follow the decision made by a locally elected board is the part with which I have issue.

Wait…what? So there is complaints at adherence to federal government when it conveniently fits your personal position, but now call for local control when it comes to the state? Wow…just wow. Holy mackerel. And you wonder why people roll their eyes at you. Unbelievable.

It is called cognitive dissonance.

Yup. Probably the same parents throwing tantrums.

For fighting against mask mandates? It was worth it to you? And you know it's just going to be performance--FCPS will be able to keep them as long as the CDC recommends it (and that's how long they would have kept them anyway) or the legislation changes--which isn't the governor anyway. I hope you think about your voting a little more carefully rather than impulsively in the future if this really is your thought process.

Over a mask mandate? For real? Wow.

Since you didn't see my response from upthread. Yes, for real.

I do think my voting for Youngkin will be worth it to me and my family. I am hoping that FCPS will bend to the pressure sooner rather than later. We shall see. FWIW, I care mostly about protecting the environment in meaningful ways, enacting strict gun control, and balancing the budget. Not like the Democrats are getting any of that done for me.

I think it is a shame that Youngkin is pushing back against the vaccine mandates, but considering the Supreme Court decision, it isn't like McAuliffe would have been able to enforce them either.

NP here. My reluctant vote for Youngkin was based on a lot more than masks. It was the fact the my kid missed the last 1/4 of K and 3/4 of 1st grade. It was the democratic party's and national teachers union's insistence that virtual learning was learning and that they were fully justified in shutting down schools. It was the refusal to admit that the school shutdowns were a massive mistake, despite all evidence to the contrary, and it was the complete lack of urgency to do anything to address the learning loss that occurred over the past two years. And on top of that, if you complained about any of this, you were accused of being a Karen, racist, or "throwing tantrums." Dem are going to lose the suburbs in the coming midterms. And schools will be a very big reason.

Oh hang on. You voted for a REPUBLICAN governor, because Republicans are known for their environmental stewardship, support for common sense gun legislation, and ability to balance budgets?

Um, no. I voted for Youngkin because of the mask mandate and threat of virtual school. I was just saying that the VA Demoncrats do not consider my priorities to be their priorities at the moment, so 4 years of Ypungkin will likely not be much different than McAuliffe in that regard.

Pressure for what? Masks?

And VA requires a balanced budget so not sure why that’s relevant. Federally, Ds do a better job at balancing the budget.

Ds have pushed for gun control and environmental protections for years. Blocked by Rs.

So…for real?

So out of spite because you didn’t like how local school systems handled a global crisis.

Not very rational…

No. Let’s take the mask issue. What I’m saying is regardless of the decision to mask or not mask I think the decision should be made by the local board. You then follow the rules set by that board. I’m not ok with saying the local boards can make the decision (whatever that decision may be) but you don’t have to follow it.

Yes, for real. Four years of Youngkin versus four years of McAuliffe will likely not make much difference with regard to the policies I care about.
But hopefully, Youngkin will make a difference with eliminating the mask mandate and keeping our kids in school.
