If the county isn't allowed to placed a mask mandate in the classroom

Aside from the ASD mom above who I can understand the concern from I am baffled as to why people are so eager to get rid of masks for kids. Mine are 10 and 14. They do not complain at all about wearing them indoors. My neighbors don’t seem to have an issue with their kids doing so either. IRL I do not know any kids who are champing at the but to be unmasked.

When the weather improves then I will unmask. Seriously as a teacher with high risk family members I'm not sure I will continue teaching if everyone unmasks next week. If I do it will be very hard to treat families and children who chose to unmask the same way I do others. Think if it like going to the doctor while a minority or obese- you get treated differently. Obesity and racial status aren't as easy to control either.

Ps- would never say this irl, but it is the truth. It will be very difficult for all of us as teachers to treat your kid the same. I'll guess I will just make a table of you in the back of the room far far away from me.

That is really not a useful statement, because this isn't just about death. This is about the possibility of long term illnesses and possible permanent physical damage caused by Covid, even very mild Covid, that is not fully understood. Before you start in on psychological damage from missing school, people are asking kids to wear masks and we may need occasional virtual during surges if it is considered a public emergency. This is not about the damage of a year of virtual.

When we moved to Florida, masks were my biggest concern. But you know what? Kids are doing just fine in schools without wearing masks. I still wear mine much of the time. But, I kinda feel duped by the hyper vigilant mask brigade in DC/NoVA. We have lots of Covid. But, so do you. Schools did not shut down here. Kids just aren’t getting very sick. Very few people are. My father-in-law is 86 years old. Most of his friends have had it. They all have multiple medical conditions. They all did fine. My FIL had a cough. That’s it. I’m not suggesting we ignore the risk. We are all fully vaccinated as is everyone I know. We wear a mask in crowded places. Sadly, some people will get really sick. Just like they do with other viral infections. We can take steps to minimize risk without destroying mental health. This isn’t going anywhere.

I’m not an anti-masker. I am fully vaccinated. But I do think the DC area attracts type A control freaks. And this, my friends, simply cannot be controlled.

I don’t understand parents who “freak out” at the thought of no masks even EVEN if it were to happen right now. At school pickup I watch kids exit the building. I could easily slip my finger between their mask somewhere along the mask line and their face in at least 70% of all cases. If there is a finger size gap (really even a much small gap) the mask isn’t filtering the air going in or out. It’s a fact my OHSA folks will confirm. It’s theatre. Dont get me started on cloth and paper masks even if those fit snugger which they don’t. The masks aren’t doing much. Better to have a weekly test IMO. Or nothing. I’d be fine with nothing. But if we are going to force a mitigation we should at least pick the lowest cost option that works. Masking has a cost.

DH and DS were at an hour long appointment with a therapist. All masked. Two days later we get a call that therapist tested positive. DH and DS never show any symptoms. Thank goodness for masks. They should keep the mask mandate until cases are much, much lower and a vaccine is available for those under 5.

There's a big difference between wearing a mask at a 1 hour therapist appointment and for 8 hours in school. Your post is irrelevant.

Masking is not preventing spread in school. Unmask them now. Here's hoping Youngkin drops the mandate, drops quarentining the healthy, and prohibits schools from establishing mask and vaccine mandates.

Remember....you can still vaccinate and mask....its just no mandated!

The point is that wearing masks DID prevent the spread of covid. The same thing happens when they are worn in school, spread is prevented. And masks work best when everyone is wearing them - the unknowingly infected person breathes out into their mask, not onto someone else.

Except now it's not effective against Omicron unless you're wearing an N95 or equivalent.

I do. But why cant your kids wear a quality mask and mine not wear one? One way masking works. So, your kids are “protected” and others can make their own choices. The degree to which we’ve allowed an infringement on liberties is appalling. We don’t even have the data to support it.

NP here. Agree with all of the above. Further, mask mandates should continue until our hospital workers are no longer being crushed by overflowing hospitals. Now is not the time to be discussing and off-ramp for masking.
