Aside from the ASD mom above who I can understand the concern from I am baffled as to why people are so eager to get rid of masks for kids. Mine are 10 and 14. They do not complain at all about wearing them indoors. My neighbors don’t seem to have an issue with their kids doing so either. IRL I do not know any kids who are champing at the but to be unmasked. |
Given that you'd made it clear you'll ostracize kids that don't agree with your opinion, its obvious learning isn't the priority in your classroom. Hope your poor students have a better teacher next year. |
That is really not a useful statement, because this isn't just about death. This is about the possibility of long term illnesses and possible permanent physical damage caused by Covid, even very mild Covid, that is not fully understood. Before you start in on psychological damage from missing school, people are asking kids to wear masks and we may need occasional virtual during surges if it is considered a public emergency. This is not about the damage of a year of virtual. |
When we moved to Florida, masks were my biggest concern. But you know what? Kids are doing just fine in schools without wearing masks. I still wear mine much of the time. But, I kinda feel duped by the hyper vigilant mask brigade in DC/NoVA. We have lots of Covid. But, so do you. Schools did not shut down here. Kids just aren’t getting very sick. Very few people are. My father-in-law is 86 years old. Most of his friends have had it. They all have multiple medical conditions. They all did fine. My FIL had a cough. That’s it. I’m not suggesting we ignore the risk. We are all fully vaccinated as is everyone I know. We wear a mask in crowded places. Sadly, some people will get really sick. Just like they do with other viral infections. We can take steps to minimize risk without destroying mental health. This isn’t going anywhere.
I’m not an anti-masker. I am fully vaccinated. But I do think the DC area attracts type A control freaks. And this, my friends, simply cannot be controlled. |
I don’t understand parents who “freak out” at the thought of no masks even EVEN if it were to happen right now. At school pickup I watch kids exit the building. I could easily slip my finger between their mask somewhere along the mask line and their face in at least 70% of all cases. If there is a finger size gap (really even a much small gap) the mask isn’t filtering the air going in or out. It’s a fact my OHSA folks will confirm. It’s theatre. Dont get me started on cloth and paper masks even if those fit snugger which they don’t. The masks aren’t doing much. Better to have a weekly test IMO. Or nothing. I’d be fine with nothing. But if we are going to force a mitigation we should at least pick the lowest cost option that works. Masking has a cost. |
I’d like to follow you — where are you are how are the schools? |
Except now it's not effective against Omicron unless you're wearing an N95 or equivalent. |
Has the mask mandate been repealed or is it about to be repealed at the state level? |
I do. But why cant your kids wear a quality mask and mine not wear one? One way masking works. So, your kids are “protected” and others can make their own choices. The degree to which we’ve allowed an infringement on liberties is appalling. We don’t even have the data to support it. |
The problem is Youngkin is encouraging parents to not follow local mask mandates. So even in Fairfax makes one, he wants people to not follow it. |
I agree. This seems so obvious |
This is an example of the right-wing/openFCPS people frequenting the threads here and posting a lot. |
Exactly. The fact that these nutters are pushing to remove mask mandates *during* a surge just shows how crazy they are. They DGAF if schools close or hospitals are crushed. |
We have more cases now than before the vaccines and masks. They measures are not preventing spread! And, we should not be masking the heathy “ because they don’t know they are infected”. |
If he is going to make a No Mask Mandate in schools, it would be smart of him to make it “effective” in March / Spring. |
