I'm a SAHM and while I have time to workout each day, my family obligations are such that my availability can change quickly and without much notice. So I've tended to fall off the bandwagon with traditional gym membership group class schedules when I've missed a couple classes in a row.
So I recently joined Orangetheory since they offer a great workout throughout the day. It's worked well for my cardio fitness and mental state--I get a huge endorphin rush-- and I've been consistently going 2-3x/wk. Obviously the main criticism of OT is that you're not going to get an optimal strength training experience but I can't seem to find a comparable gym that offers the same kind of strength training classes multiple times each day, so I'm thinking I may just be better off trying to meet this component of my workout routine at home. I've never worked out at home so I'm hoping I can crowdsource this to see what my options and to get an idea of the sort of things I should be considering. Thanks in advance! |
Get the Peloton app (not the bike, tread …) and join the hardcore fb group or do one of Peloton’s strength training programs. You will need about three sets of hand weights at home but nothing else. Very convenient. |
This. Love hardcore calendar and group. Also, on the peloton app under strength programs, the splits are great too. |
NP. PEloton app. Cheap and easy. |
OP here. I love consensus! Didn't know Pelton had this or about the FB group. Thank you! |
Yep- another vote for Peloton strength training. I do the HardCORE group but not religiously. Peloton also has some great programs for strength (arms with tunde and crush your core with Emma). The hardcore group is good for staying on track - a few days are leg days, upper body days, full body days and rest days. |
You can follow Caroline Girvan on YouTube. She’s fabulous. You would just need some hand weights.

This is good to know. Occasionally OT surprises and you get a really good workout for a particular muscle group. So it's nice to know I can focus on other groups at home when needed. |
Not the PP - Is the Peloton App good for men also? DH would also like an option for at home. |
Yes - it’s great for both men and women and both men and women teach the strength classes. There are also beginner, intermediate, and advanced strength classes, depending on where you’re at. |
How about Beachbody for strength training? Or does everyone vote for Peloton over Beachbody. |
I love Bodypump, but while I can wake up at 5-5:30am, I don't have the discipline to get myself to a 6am class before work. And I'm too tired after work.
So I treated myself to a home bar/weight set + bench this Black Friday. About $250, but I hope to put it to good use at least once a week (I can usually make an in-person class on the weekend). |
I second this. It’s free and she’s amazing. |
I third Caroline Girvan! Start with her 5-day beginner Epic program. Then you can work up to her 10-week Epic or pick and choose a workout. Don't be intimidated by her muscles. She is really the best and is FREE. |
Probably no need to pile on, but the peloton app and hardcore on the floor group has completely transformed my body, and DH’s as well. I’ve kept up with it for 2 years now! |
