We tried it. Found it overly Christian, conservative, and a little backwards. Felt like something out of the 70's.
This varies by troop. Ours had no religion and had the parents take responsibility for the religion component in the requirements so they could handle it as they saw fit. My DC’s experience was very positive. It is a very well organized program and great intro to out doors stuff. Ours had an entirely hands off approach to religion (“Duty to God” reference in the scout law/oath is about the only time it came up in meetings). Scouts is VERY strict now about the multiple adults ratio and the safety / background training for leaders. Yes they had problems in the past but that has made them take it very seriously now. We did not have any same service families in our troop as far as I’m aware but they would have been welcome to join as it was just a school based troop open to all.
