It’s not like there are other pools around that the parents could join instead.

Are there though?

Do you live in that area? Because I do (not that specific HOA, but just a few miles away) and I certainly do not know of any other pool they could join close by. Most HOAs have their own pool and do not allow non residents to join. Can you please tell us the name of these "other pools around" that they could join?

There aren’t any ymcas in Virginia?

What's wrong with the Central Park Aquatic Center?

They should be paying $1,000 for the cost to replace the door and the library materials. The fact that they also weren't arrested for destruction of public property?

There is no library on the HOA grounds. I'm pretty sure they are referring to a small box that contains a few books that you can borrow. Being on the HOA is a thankless job, but this HOA has a couolecmembers who are a PITA. Trespassing a kid for 7 years is just absurd.

+1 on the 7 year ban. That’s really egregious if only based on this one event (unlikely, I know). But the list of other offenses need to be really long for a 7 year punishment.

1+ The girls that killed a man after carjacking him got a shorter punishment.

Expecting community service to be the consequence is pretty entitled as it requires supervision and coordination on someone else’s time.

To clarify: according to NBC4 the boys vandalized a little free library on HOA property, not a public library.

This is a feature, not a bug. The kids were not raised in a vacuum.

+1 Yeah, come on people--it's two 11 year olds who broke the door of a Little Free Library box. That's probably 50$ worth of damage.

It was an 11 yo, a 14 yo, and a third unidentified child. I have a 12 yo and would be horrified if they did something like that - definitely wouldn’t fight them being banned from the pool for a summer.

How about 7 summers?

One summer, fine. Seven summers is ridiculous. So much can happen to a kid's development in 7 years.

It is mostly open for lap swim not really "recreational swim." I was actually a member there for a while while I was training for swim races. It's a deep lap pool--no shallow end for just wading or playing "marco polo" or whatever it is kids do these days.

Sounds perfect. These kids have too much energy and no reverence for community property. Let the parents pay an admittance fee for the CPAC and have them do laps all summer in punishment. Will make them better swimmers too!

Banning them for years insane and probably unlawful. The parents could and should sue if they enforce this. Pretty sure a court would side with the family, unless there are other documented issues that have been going on

The pool and the library are HOA property. But I'd love for this family to go to court over this and the HOA to get a police report involved.

The HOA already came up with a plan for replacement and decided not to press charges. But even if they did, go ahead. This would be expunged from
an 11 yr old’s record. The parents pay into HOA and have a right to the pool.

Like parents, like children. The mother has a lengthy criminal record and the son looks well on his way. Maybe they need to focus on modeling better behavior instead of frivolous attacks on the local school system and the local HOA.

Not in time for college applications.

Sure it could, depending on his birthday. Many colleges have application deadlines in January or even February, so if he has a fall or early winter birthday, he's good to go.

The mom of the boy that was banned for 7 years made a comment on the NBC Washington article on facebook. It was under someone else's comment that there must have been more incidents than just this for the boy to be banned for 7 years. The mom replied to that comment saying:

"or the parent lives across the street from the hoa president and that president has animosity towards the parent and using this as a power trip.
In another article. The 11 year old has no prior anything. There is always more. Hoas are power trips"

...

Yeah, I'd tell her to be quiet because if anything happens to that HOA president - her butt is doing 15 years in prison.
