Why are we renaming George mason?
He owned over 100 slaves. Unlike some of the other Founders, he did not free them and make provisions for them in his will.
Can we learn from the past rather than try to change the past? This is stupid.
Yes, your comment is stupid. You can't change the past. Even after the name change, the past will be exactly the same, we just won't be celebrating his legacy with a school name.
It seems to me renaming the school *is* learning from the past. We as a society have learned that it isn’t consistent with our shared values to name our institutions of learning to honor slave holders. Now we’re doing something with that knowledge.
Those values don’t seem to be shared, but rather imposed by officials who think renaming schools is more important than prioritizing access to education. You can engage in all these performative acts and two days later someone from Falls Church City will be telling someone to make sure they look at houses in FCC, rather than the parts of the county with Falls Church addresses, because the schools with more minorities are “bad.”
Those two things are in no ways mutually exclusive. It may even help some students feel invested in their school of it’s not named for someone who would have considered educating them abhorrent. Is inclusion at least a shared value?
Keep telling yourself that - it may make you feel better about the hypocrisy.
