Any guesses where Pete and Chasten Buttigieg will live in the DMV?

Pretty sure cabinet level folk get motorcades.

Motorcades? LOL.

This thread has been enlightening re: even DC people’s misconceptions re: how political appointees live vs. how rather really live.

My guess is Logan Circle.

Del Ray, obviously.

They don’t have a kid yet, and for gays it takes years. Unless they’ve already been actively working on it for years, they’re not factoring in a kid right now.

And budget won’t matter. Between they’re book deals and speaker fees they’re rolling in it.

Took us gays 17 months from start to bringing DD home....not sure where you got your info from.

Pete will be working crazy hours and they'll be adjusting to DC culture (shock), not a great time to start a family. Doubt they'll be in any rush.

I think they will live in Capitol Hill in a 3BR/2BA rowhouse with a finished basement.

Pete will be driven to/from work each day by DOT uniformed officers. Something within a 10 minute drive from the office. Chasten can get a teaching job in one of the many nearby charter or DCPS schools. Room to grow for kids, plus lots of other young families around. Cap Hill is super progressive and friendly to LGBTQ professional families.

That puts them on the Hill. They are not crunchy, so TP is out out.

Cabinet Secretaries get a driver and a Chevy Suburban, plus armed escorts. It's not a motorcade, but Pete won't be driving himself to/from the office.

That's not a motorcade...and the OPs confidence in that was obnoxious.

Ex-1 (cabinet secretary) pay is $219k this year. If husband gets a teaching job, figure ~300k in working income. Question is whether they buy or rent. Figure 5-7k/mth if they rent. That would get them something nice, but not extravagant, in most places west of the park.

wait, teachers are making $80K?

Here's a sample pay scale for DCPS: https://dcps.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dcps/publication/attachments/ET-15%20FY%2019%20Pay%20Schedule.pdf

Private school could pay him whatever they like.

Do you start over on the scale if you’re new to DCPS but have teaching experience elsewhere? Like if Chasten has 10 years teaching experience in Indiana does he start at the 10 year step in DC?

(My sister is a teacher elsewhere in the country and worked 16 years in one district in her state but then when her family relocated two hours away in the same state and she got a job in a different district she had to take a pay cut and moved down on the scale. Her 16 years in the other district did count for some, but she definitely didn’t start at the 16th year step in her new district. Just curious if it works that way in DC, too.)

If you’ve been doing it for awhile and you have your masters (which most teachers do), yes, you can make a good salary in DCPS. My wife has been an elementary teacher in DC since she graduated from college in 2003 and makes six figures.
