Chlorine won’t help when the swimmer in the lane next to you cough or sneezes. Then there is the issue of the team area, clerk of course....

There are usually tons of kids waiting at the side of the pool for practice. We have 10-15 kids at times in one lane. The meets with 300+ kids on two large teams, plus families is a recipe for disaster.

Riiiight. So you have to do it differently.

Explain how you think it could work. The option I see for summer swim
Fail:

1. Practice is spread out over time - instead of from 8-11:30, it’s much longer so that fewer kids come to many practices. Nope - coach won’t wait around for that and the pool can’t close all day.

2. Kids swim and don’t stop at either end. Nope - summer (only) swimmers can’t do this.

3. Kids swim a few laps and get out and rest. Won’t for work many 8 and unders and some 9-10s. Who will keep them apart while they rest? The coach will be watching those finishing swimming and not the kids out of the pool. Who has enough deck space to do this effectively? Kids will try to talk to each other.

4. Kids swim a lap then get out and slowly walk around the pool and get in again. Some kids will be faster and several will still be hitting the wall at the same time as the person ahead of them. Likely bottlenecks will happen.

Open to ideas!

Most kids are already out and about playing with one another, at least in my NoVa neighborhood. So bring on swim team.
I know very few families that have actually managed to keep their kids away from all other children for the past 7 weeks.

Those of us responsible parents have not allowed our kids to be with other kids and families. Those families who are irresponsible, like you are the reason why we cannot have swim team as normal.

This is definitely not true. It’s nursing homes, jails, and essential workers - not kids playing outside.

Not true. The latest studies suggest that kids do not give this to each other.

Phase 1 begins as early as May 15 in VA. Phase 2 happens 3 weeks later

you can watch it on facebook at anytime. Just search for VA governor northam and you'll get the gov's facebook page. It's best to watch it. The details aren't clear yet, but they are limiting public gatherings to 50 people in phase 2 (which would likely start around early/mid June). Phase 3 would be in Aug. and that's when there are no limits on the number of people who can gather.

That said, they could also come back in a week and tell us that outdoor activities like x and y don't count for the limits on gatherings. I would think they would be giving specific guidance on pools since so many people would be preparing or wanting to prepare for pool season. It's probably coming out in the next few days.

He said he anticipates each phase lasts 3 weeks- I would say Phase 3 is at the end of June most likely, and Phase 2 starts most likely June 6th.

Phase 3 is anticipated to be 2.5-3 months away from now.

Thanks for the update but also the tip that I can try to watch it later!

What is your basis for saying this? I literally just heard Northam say that he thought each phase would be 3 weeks. that would make Phase 3 in less than 8 weeks- not 2.5 - 3 months

He had a chart on the screen as he spoke on the channel I was watching. He had one for each phase in blue. The phase 1 one is here.

The phase 3 one said something in the bottom about being 10 to 12 weeks from now or more. My sister saw the same thing because we watched it while on the phone together.

Yes, not sure how to attach an image, but the slide for Phase III said, “Phase III could be 10-12 weeks away, or more”

He said that for phase 1 to phase 2 but for phase 3 lots of things need to happen... hence the lag time
