For those of us with elderly loved ones and are also immunocompromised ourselves, it feels scary. |
The fact that it is mild in many people is what makes it spread so rapidly ... and that is dangerous because the death rate has been around one or two percent |
I guess we should be grateful it is not more deadly along with the spread. It could. Easily. |
No perfect solution, but in ideal world if we had an island and take al vulnerable there to protect ..long before anYthing arrives, and bring them back safely after it goes away.. as this thing does not strong people, so death rate would be zero, and all could just ride it with no precautions of any kind. |

Entirely unexpected effect of the Coronavirus On Chinese air pollution.. well .. it is basically gone!
reported by CNN today... Coronavirus: Nasa images show China pollution clear amid slowdown ![]() |
^^
Satellite images have shown a dramatic decline in pollution levels over China, which is "at least partly" due to an economic slowdown prompted by the coronavirus, US space agency Nasa says. Nasa maps show falling levels of nitrogen dioxide this year. It comes amid record declines in China's factory activity as manufacturers stop work in a bid to contain coronavirus. |
A 98 year old is the oldest person so far in China to have been hospitalized as critical for COVID-19 who has recovered and been released.

so China does play a big role in global warming. Who knew? |
They are the worst offender. They have many coal-fueled power plants and are the major producer of cement, perhaps the worst industry for producing emissions. |
It's almost like you didn't read the article. It's the opposite of reassuring, unless you live in Singapore. There, they took aggressive measures at the outset (US has not). There, they have a top notch medical system (here, we have uninsured, underinsured, and a system that depends on China for drugs and PPE). |
Despite 6+ weeks of spreading in Washington State and given the 1-2 week incubation period, we still aren't seeing droves of people being hospitalized there, so maybe it is already mutating to a less virulent form.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/01/world/coronavirus-news.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage#link-353b1559 In Washington State, researchers compared two cases in the hopes of learning more about how the coronavirus spreads. The findings suggest that it has been spreading in the state for close to six weeks, according to one of the scientists who compared the sequences, Trevor Bedford, an associate professor at the University of Washington. If that is true, it could mean that 150 to 1,500 people “have either been infected and recovered or currently are infected now,” said Mike Famulare, a researcher at the Institute for Disease Modeling in Bellevue, Wash., who performed the analysis. Those cases, if they exist, have thus far been undetected. |
I think this thread is having a hard time coming up with legit good news. |
Yes quite difficult. I contributed the recovery of the 98 year old, which I think is one of the few posts that were actually about good news. I post frequently on the other thread and that was the only bit of news I have come across that I thought qualified for this one. |
