Churchill science teacher escorted off campus today?

I think as a parent, I’m so fed up and frustrated with MCPS! Hopefully this was just ‘making out’ in the hall and nothing worse.

I saw a talk a few years by Joshua Starr when he was Superintendent of MCPS. I know there are various opinions about him and I wasn't involved enough with MCPS at the time to have my own opinion. But I remember being shocked when he forcefully said two or three times that he "would never fire a teacher." He gave a dramatic pause each time he said it, and I kept waiting to hear some caveat such as "unless they are involved with criminal activity" or "unless they fail multiple chances to improve their teaching". But no, he left it as an absolute rule to never fire a teacher.

At the time I thought he might have been exaggerating to demonstrate his support for MCPS teachers. But now I am not so sure.

If this is under investigation by the police, they may be forbidden from saying anything until the police file a public report. There is some sort of agreement between MCPS and MCPD about communications while things are investigated. Rumor I heard was that teacher and student were making out in hallway before school. If so, that is likely to be on camera. Hopefully the police will file charges soon and we will know what actually happened.

In the HALLWAY?

My dd said it was in a storage closet, but I kind of assumed that part was the rumor mill.

Please. I hesitate to even write this because I think it’s strange to be bringing up someone who left the system five years ago, but I worked with Dr. Starr closely when we he was superintendent, and I can assure you that you misunderstood his comments. We had several conversations about that exact issue. You may not want to hear this, but it’s the truth. I’d focus your energy on current decision makers though.

Damn you, Joshua Starr!!! Who has been gone from MCPS for 4 years now.

PP here. I didn't know much about MCPS when Starr was superintendent, so I'm not sure why you would say "Damn you"

But the attitude that he expressed in that speech still seems to be present in MCPS -- that you never fire a teacher no matter how outrageous their behavior.

The people of Stamford CT misunderstood him too when he failed to fire administrators who did not report sexual abuse. They went to jail.

DP - it's a joke on these boards, that so much gets blamed on Starr. It's not an insult to him.

has there been any confirmation of any of this?

OK I'll take your word for it. It is possible he was reacting to educators at the time like Michelle Rhee who swung the opposite direction -- looking for any opportunity to fire teachers. And he was speaking to a teacher-union friendly audience.

And for those looking for news about the science teacher, I apologize for the digression. But it may be like the suspended Churchill coach last year for which there was no news for months, until he was reinstated (correctly, I suspect).

This would be true (MCPS cooperating with MCPD) if they actually did it, but they don't cooperate and there is documented proof of that going back years. Abuse of children in MCPS schools has been a problem for decades. One superintendent after another has passed this problem on and the current one is just doing the same. Read this article and ask yourself if you think kids are safe in MCPS.

Whoa. I'll wait for the report: my teen said it was a kiss on the forehead after the student fell on the floor. I'm sure the rumor had been circulating by the time they heard it.

Word from my child is: "he kissed her on the forehead because she was freaking out about a test. But you know how teens can be. Who knows!"

18:01 here. I'll clarify: DC heard from several students the student had a concussion and was crying because they were afraid they were going to fail the test. DC said that was when the teacher kissed her forehead.

My DC loves their teachers this year for their extreme kindness and excellent teaching. DC is very contemplative about this situation since they believe the forehead kiss was paternalistic affection by a little, old man towards a kid who was losing it. DC is upset this teacher "lost" their job over a broken game of telephone.

I hope we find the truth since it seems there are two very different versions of this story going around.

Might be why there’s no letter. The school did what they promised to do, but upon investigation, the teacher is not a pervert. Hard to walk back.
