What does it mean to “ban” abortion?

Or Ireland

Or a state where abortion is still legal. Simple bus ride away.

Simple? really?

My bad - is Greyhound complicated?

It is if you can't pay for your ticket or the hotel bill where you're traveling too or the 2 days you have to take off of work.

So sorry you have a condition where you find it impossible to imagine scenarios of people being affected by things differently than you would be. Must be tough to be so limited.

And tell me DCUM reader -- Ms. Middle Class at 300k -- how many people do you personally hang out with who are at all affected by any of these problems? That they couldn't afford a greyhound ticket or 2 nights at Motel 6? I'm sure you have hordes of such friends, right? Or you're just soooo empathetic that you're not worried about your friends and family but the plight of the rural poor in Mississippi who will be so affected by this?

Distance creates barriers. The greater the distance the more likely that it isn’t going to happen:
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2598282
https://www-m.cnn.com/2017/10/03/health/abortion-a...parities-study/index.html?rm=1

“"The other thing we found in our research in Texas was that these geographic barriers could also create delays for patients before they could access abortion care," Grossman said.

"It takes time for women to arrange transportation, to gather the money together to pay for transportation. Sometimes, a woman has to decide to tell someone she wouldn't normally tell about the procedure in order to get that person to drive her to the clinic," he explained. "All these things take time, and this is obviously a time-sensitive procedure."

Greater distance to travel, then, meant some women had abortions in the second trimester.

"And a few women were unable to get the abortions they wanted," Grossman said.”

As for --- OMG poor people can’t afford that. Give me a break, I’m having a very hard time believing the Harvard educated, raised in Greenwich/Long Island biglaw women I work with are soooo personally concerned about ghetto black women or rural Indiana white women. And let’s be honest, how many abortions does the average women get in a lifetime? Across all women, I bet it’s 0. But even if I’m wrong and it’s 1 or 2. I’m sorry if you need to get rid of a kid, 2x in your life, you will borrow from your baby daddy or a get pay day loan, get yourself on a greyhound bus and a motel 6 room and get it done. This is America, not rural Africa or South America; even poor people have access to credit cards – charge it all and pay it back for years, you’ll still get what you need. And if you don’t have credit, see above re pay day loans. It’s not THAT big of a deal.

Just because your capacity for empathy is broken doesn’t mean everyone’s is. We are not all so hateful and ignorant as you.

Why is it ignorant and hateful? Aren't there financial solutions there to get an abortion if you need it? What the gov't has to provide the abortion AND make it as convenient as possible for you?

Wow, you really just doubled down on your ignorance there. Congratulations.

But answer the question -- if abortions are available somewhere, why is it also required that it must be as easy as possible for you to get one? Why is it tragic if you have to inconvenience yourself to get one?

You fundamentally misunderstand the legal, political, financial and medical landscape here. Go educate yourself and then come back to talk to the grown-ups, until then you’re not worth wasting time on.

The fact that not one of you can answer one simple question – why must abortion be made convenient – suggests to me there is no answer beyond the usual liberal – FAIRNESS garbage.

Are you going to say that when you need a root canal that is only available 3 states away? What's the big deal? Why does your health care have to be convenient?

Bc despite all the yelling about rape and medical needs (for which they can always carve out an exception w hospitals), the MAJORITY of abortions are provided to women who don't want to have the baby of whomever they willingly slept with. They could've prevented that problem -- contraception, not putting out, whatever. They didn't. Now if they're inconvenienced bc they undertook consensual, pleasurable activity -- eh.

Oh I see, it's about shame. Women need to be shamed. If you aren't virtuous you don't deserve health care, right?

The thing is, why would you want to force the unvirtuous women to have the babies? Scratching my head at that one.

It’s incredible how all of the shame, responsibility and burden falls squarely on the girl’s shoulders. While the boy who got her pregnant gets a free pass from society.

Blame biology -- he doesn't carry the baby so no one sees that he's the one who impregnated her. That's just the way nature designed it fair or not.

Brainwashing doesn’t get things like logic or reasoning.

We should have a national referendum like them. Sick and tired of old men rule.

If you voted for the admitted pussy-grabber, you have zero moral authority on issues of sexual conduct.

It wouldn’t be a “short bus ride” from Mississippi to the nearest blue state and the poor couldn’t afford the hotel stays.

This means the red states would have a ballooning of poor people. The very poor in these states are mostly black. That means the black population would explode.

Great, demography change the republicans would love.

You know how one can prevent that? Not letting a guy put it in when you're in high school. I'm not for abstinence only and I do think there are medical/criminal reasons for abortion, but let's be honest if any particular high school girl is soooo worried for her future bc she fears a condom will break and she wouldn't be able to get an abortion -- would it be the end of the world to not start sleeping with people until after high school??

So suddenly it is all on the women?

Don’t expect reason from people who oppose abortion yet voted for someone who openly admitted to Howard Stern he’d wanted Marla Maples to abort Tiffany.

Really, why do you hate women? I mean, you write like a woman, so I suspect you are one, but why are you so full of rage? I’m an upper middle class woman in the blue Midwest whose husband - and only sex partner - has a vasectomy (after four boys, we’re done!). We have okay insurance and the money to bridge the gap to the deductible. But I’m aware that not all women have that. So yes I feel empathy for the women who have to find child care, take off multiple days at a crap job where they fit really get the days off, have to travel across the state and spend a night or three a hotel for the idiotic “waiting period.” Why are you so busted that you have no empathy?

Did a boyfriend force you to abort? Did your parents force you to give up your baby for adoption? Because you are really angry and taking it out on people who are just having empathy for those with a tougher go. There must be a reason.

Nope. But I knew not to open my legs until I could 100% take care of a baby if a boyfriend walked away the next day. If people don't have any sense of responsibility, I can only feel so bad for their situation.

Feel bad for their children. They're going to have really crappy lives, because you decided their mom was a whore who deserved what she got (children being the punishment for sex, of course).

Well I guess if your bf can get pregnant it’s on him. If not it’s gonna be your problem to get rid of the kid or raise the kid.

If it’s not consensual go to the cops and the hospital and get an abortion that way. Pretty sure that option isn’t going away.

Of course it can go away. Anti-abortion advocates don’t actually want exceptions.
