Life is going to be a whole lot longer than you'd like if you can't adapt and overcome.

NP. That’s great for you, but anesthesia has a very powerful effect on me and I slept for 20 hours out of the first 24 after my wisdom teeth were removed. Everyone doesn’t have the same experience.

NP. I had my wisdom teeth (and other teeth) out with local. I can't imagine risking general anesthesia for teeth.

Hmmm. Our dentist only uses general anesthesia if you're getting all 4 teeth out, not laughing gas. Laughing gas is reserved for when it's only a tooth or two needing removal.

Bullshit! General anesthetic requires intubation so you are able to breathe file under such deep sedation. Your wisdom teeth are not removed while you were intubated use your freaking head

I am not an Oral Surgeon, but I worked closely with the oral surgery residents during my general residency. For complicated wisdom tooth extractions that need to be done under GA, they intubate through nose.

Use your freaking head.

Anonymous wrote:OP, this sucks that they told you they'd do it and now they won't, but it is kind of unreasonable to expect that this be done on a Saturday. I understand that's a hardship for you, and I get it, but there are just certain things and certain professionals that don't do weekends. Dentistry is typically one of them.

But this guy WAS doing Saturdays.

And now he's not doing Saturdays. I had an emergency root canal on Saturday once. For a scheduled dental procedure, I wouldn't expect to have it done on Saturday.

But some of the oral surgeons/ dentists do work Saturday, therefore it is not unreasonable to think you can find one.
This guy did. That’s why she chose him.

I would find someone new.

This. That would piss me off too.

I think people are missing the point. He didn't cancel one appointment. He changed his schedule to no longer work on Saturdays. This would make me mad too. Find a new dentist op. This is not professional.

So ... indentured servitude?

Once a small business owner sets hours, it is unprofessional to ever change them, even with advance notice that they are making a change?

And I’m sure this is the first time this dentist has ever had someone call in the troops to help them convalesce from tooth removal.

OP, curious what you would do if you had an accident and needed emergency oral surgery? Whatever you’d would do, do that when you reschedule.

But yeah, stuff happens.

Op I see a lot of people had no problem with their sugeries. I had mine out at 22. I got a dry socket. I slept day 1. It was blinding pain and they had to squeeze me back in on day 3.

Sometimes it happens. Not everything revolves around you, snowflake.

I got 3 cut out at 19. I was on pain meds and sleeping for the first day and then swollen, eating soft foods and not wanting to be seen by anyone the 2nd day. Around the 3rd day I felt better and went out for ice cream with my boyfriend. I screwed up and got ice cream with nuts, which I couldn't chew...doh.

I didn’t get anesthesia and 2 out of 4 were impacted. I didn’t feel pain but hearing it and feeling the pulling was not pleasant. My dentist suggested not having anesthesia since I was having stitches and the recovery would be easier. Later it was painful but I hate the feeling of coming off anesthesia. It wasn’t worse than that. You can do this, OP, without your parents for the weekend. Good luck. It’s frustrating but life happens.

FOR REAL! It's Wisdom teeth, not your spleen. Geez Christmas. I have had 2 pulled, it's not major surgery, most people don't even get gas. What makes your surgery so special, are your wisdome teeth in your ass or something?

OMG I'm a dentist and I'm laughing. I would love to see that!

Lol can you be my,dentist!

Do you have teeth in you ass? I'm in! Always looking for an interesting case

Ewww you guy's sound gross and immature. Yuck.

Guys, not “guy’s”. You are using the plural, not the possessive.

I did the same. I hate anesthesia, going under, waking up crying... They just put tons of shots in my gums and yanked all four out. I focused on the picture of my dentist with some famous politician on the wall. Only.in DC...

I had all 4 out with just local anesthesia (the numbing shots), including 2 impacted. Was not that bad at all. I was not willing to take the risks general anesthesia just to avoid a little discomfort.

Op here: Thanks. I scheduled an appointment with another oral surgeon. Hopefully she will be ok with giving me strong pain meds after the surgery. I should be ok. I had the flu and hand foot and mouth disease twice in the last few months. I don't know how I survived those days.

NP. I generally agree with you that a business is free to change its hours. But, if a doctor (or anyone else with prescheduled appointments) booked Saturday hours, I think it would be unprofessional to simply cancel all existing appointments because he no longer wanted to work Saturdays. I would expect them to honor the appointments already made (barring some more specific and exigent conflict) and simply not schedule any future appointments on the weekend. OP might still be pissed because she picked this dentist based on weekend hours, but at that point I think the dentist is well within his right to change the schedule going forward and OP is free to find someone else if she prefers.

I think this quite a far cry from indentured servitude.

Can you get your Dentist to at the very least find a colleague or another dentist to do it within the near future?

Explain to them all you have done (moving mountains!) to prepare for this, including flying out your Mom.

Perhaps they can try to find someone else available who can take you very soon.

So very sorry OP.
This sucks.
A lot.

I'll chime in with everyone else. Lots of us have wisdom teeth (including impacted) out with just local anesthesia. That's how I had mine done. You feel fine afterwards, and take painkillers, so you can go about your business, just taking it easy so that you form good clots. The general is what makes you feel awful, not the tooth extraction. I let them knock out my oldest teen when he had his done, and he was so out of it and miserable afterwards from the general. So I had them do my second teen with local, and he did much better.
