It's one thing to adopt an older child if you are already a child-less couple or your children are much older and out of the house. It's another thing to bring in an older child with their problems into a family with two young, impressionable daughters. What was Beth thinking in suggesting that? I get she wants to find a solution that makes Randall happy but you have to put your own daughters first!

Exactly what I was thinking. If I had two young children - girls or boys - I wouldn't bring an older child into the family who might possibly have issues. You just never know what the older child might wind up doing to the younger ones. And I say this regardless of race or gender, before anyone sounds the outrage alarm.

He is very controlling and jealous of Kate's relationship with her family. I definitely think the writers could go deep into his anger issues and his past. I envision a scene with Kevin beating the crap out of him after emotionally abusing Kate. I want Toby to be viciously killed. I dislike his character the most.

Wow! I find him a little annoying, but you really hate him! I don't think he's an abuser at all. He and Kevin are her biggest supporters.

They had Kevin in their basement for a year, isn't that practice enough?

Seriously, I think that after having William and Kevin disrupt their lives, the girls are probably resilient but they might show some conflict in upcoming episodes if it does happen. The actors playing the girls are now regulars so expect to see them more this season.

It's more than whether or not the kids are resilient. It's a matter of keeping your kids safe.

+100
Does this not even occur to some people?

EXACTLY what I was thinking!!! I couldn't put my finger on why it all seemed so familiar, but I finally got it. Very similar.

Yes - obviously he was home alone and everyone else was out.

Can't be that last one. We've already been through that. Brutal.

Uh, when? I don't remember that.

I think PP's referring to "Manchester by the Sea" - very similar house fire, drunk husband, etc.

Maybe he was at a bar drinking. I don't think he died in the fire because his belongings were too pristine. But I do think he died that day.

but how did she call him? Pretty sure there were no cell phones around when he died.

NP. If the kids are 17, it's about 1997. I had a cellphone then.

I think you're really reaching. He was probably there alone, passed out from drinking, and died from smoke inhalation - not from being burned. Which would explain why his belongings were intact.

I think Jack didn't die in the house, not sure why but I think he may have die in the AA meeting house? Don't ask me why!

I actually liked how her story line ended up. It was refreshing for the viewers - and for her - to hear total honesty from the casting director when he told her it had nothing to do with her appearance, it was simply that her singing wasn't good enough. You could see a fire being lit under her when she thought about what he was saying. For once, it had nothing to do with her looks. She realized that she could work hard and maybe improve her singing, and that's what she's going to do. I thought it was a very positive note for her.

The girl who plays the young Kate is SO well cast! It's amazing how she not only looks like the older Kate, but her voice and mannerisms are the same too.

Because thecshowed the door closing on the AA meeting, and it was done in a way that made me think it was something very final.

Milo Ventimiglia deserves an Emmy from last night's show.

The Emmy went to Sterling K. Brown.

Yes, the Emmy given out this year went to Sterling K. Brown for his work on last season. I suggested that Ventimiglia get an Emmy next year for his work in last night's episode.

Nice idea but there’s no category for a single episode for a drama lead actor.

To the contrary, when an actor attempts to win an Emmy, he submits - wait for it - one episode. There's no category for the entire season for a drama lead actor.

My guess is drunk and asleep with a cigarette (even though we don't see him smoking) or left stove on or whatever and passed out. Probably going to keep it simole

Ok. I thought Sterling and Milo (and others) were up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for last season. And Sterling won. So what episode did Sterling win for?

Exactly! I'm the poster you quoted. Then last night when she admitted to writing all Yes answers - even to the question "would you be okay with a child who suffered physical or mental abuse" (or however it was worded). Beth just answered yes without giving it any thought! At least Randall had the intelligence to question how it would affect the daughters. What type of parent would honestly answer yes to that question when they have two young daughters at home?

Beth bugged me last night. I'm beginning not to like her. Kate is indeed insufferable.

Toby gave a great speech to Rebecca - Team Kate forevah. The small gesture he made to Miguel (pigs in a blanket) was also really thoughtful. I'm glad he seems to want to befriend Miguel.

I feel bad for Rebecca. She doesn't seem like a bad mom at all. Randall seems to be the only one of the kids who understands her or is willing to see her side. The other two seem to idolize Jack therefore Rebecca must be bad.

I seem to be the only one who is going crazy waiting for the "how Jack died" episode. Sure I want to see it, but I'm also interested in how Rebecca ended up with Miguel and more of what exactly caused the strain between Kevin, Kate and Rebecca. There has to be more to it. Well, maybe not a strain between Kevin and Rebecca because he is just self-centered and doesn't consider his mom's feelings.

I was annoyed that they didn't finish the story line about Jack's death. Kate definitely had something to do with his death--she said so in a previous episode.

I didn't like how Kate treated her mom. Her mom was trying to be supportive, and Kate takes everything too seriously when it comes to her mom.
