A Day Without Women in Our Public Schools on March 8?

I can see why people voted Trump.

Yes, because all teachers are just Mommies, making a little on the side.

Try to stay on track dear- this thread is about schools closing- because I haven't heard of a single business closing, have you?

It is not because I don't support gender equality - I do, and I dislike Trump as much as anyone. But the march is very short sighted. I teach at a school where the majority of students are low-income. Their parents are not employed in positions where they can take off with such short notice. They are not in positions where they get paid time off. They are often paid hourly, and so they're either left scrambling to find childcare (a hassle, plus $$) or have to forego a day's worth of pay. Or leave their kids at home, unsupervised. None of which are good options.

It's just a really shitty position to put these parents in.

Do you get this upset about snow days? You realize there were no snow days in Alexandria this year, which is fairly unusual.

Exactly and a lot of the people above don't necessarily support your salary raise, so what better way to make them notice?

What? I am not a teacher. Just someone who finds the panic about the effect of the day without women on daycare a little odd.

+1. This is inconvenient, but not earth shattering. Parents have to find coverage for snow days, when their child is sick, etc. This year they were fortunate enough to not have a lot of snow days, so they had less disruptions than usual. All of this wailing and carrying on about parents being burdened by having to find one day of childcare is completely over the top.

On a separate note, I don't know why APS didn't just say no to the personal leave requests that they couldn't get covered.

^^because it's women screwing women over. It is a huge PIA to find childcare--on snow events my Office is typically closed or allows for unannounced telework, etc. not so for this elitist March of privileged women.

Great. Now Prince Georges County is falling to this stupidity. How are single working mothers supposed to find childcare on the Eve of this ill-thought out "protest"?

Exactly! There's always this self-righteous teacher who's just oh sooooo much better than all her other colleagues who puts on her cape to fly into every thread and pat herself on the back for being just the greatest person ever and only teacher to care about "da children".

BS

Thank you! That poster was not making herself or her colleagues look better with that ridiculous post.
