how many of us have a mother or MIL who never worked outside the home in her lifetime?

This is a serious issue that a lot of people overlook. My father died unexpectedly early. My mother worked, but at a trailing spouse job. When my father died, my mother was not old enough for SS. He had retired a year earlier and they were living comfortably on his SS and other retirement money as well as her trailing spouse income. With the SS gone, the financial house of cards was in disarray.

If you depend on a primary earner, you need to consider financial disaster not just when raising children but for your entire life. Those of us who have moms and grandmoms who didn't have access to the same job opportunities we do need to be particularly aware of this gap.

Tell your grandmother that your grandfathers SS will not stop at his death. She will get the larger of the qualifying amount. There is a possibility that his pension might stop but also a possibility it will continue albeit not at the same amount.
