S/o how much was your wedding ring?

Ering was $3600 for a platinum diamond solitaire. My wedding ring was $500 for a platinum diamond half eternity, and DH's was $180-200 for 14k yellow gold plain ring.

What people? You? Pull yourself together!

I completely agree. $25k+ for something the size of a nickel? I'd much rather use that money to take nice vacations for the next 5-10 years.

But why not spend that much if you can still take nice vacations?

It still just seems like a ridiculous waste. Seriously, 25k+ for something the size of a nickel? That is absurdly, gratuitously wasteful.

Engagement ring was about $3000 -- it's an eternity band. Wedding ring is plain platinum band and was, I think, in the neighborhood of $700. Wear both every day.

You're not a jewelry person, we get it. You think the fuel that gets you to your vacation destination isn't "absurdly, gratuitously wasteful"?

Once again, I am blown away by the number of allegedly educated, intelligent adults on this board who haven't grasped that different people have goals and ideals.

To the people who have the bands from Walmart, for example, how have they held up? I have one or two costume pieces from similar places and they look like costume pieces a few weeks into wearing them.

My engagement ring was $1100, and my band was $70 (this was eleven years ago). Ah, the joys of small town prices! I love how diamonds look, but even the lab created ones are out of our budget for now.

$75 for a plain yellow gold band off Amazon.

I like fine jewelry, but I wanted a really simple, wearable wedding ring. I live a fairly active and messy life (I run and hike, and I do a lot of DIY home and garden projects).

My husband tries to buy me an "upgrade" ring every anniversary. I am not ordinarily low maintenance (I like shoes and purses and expensive makeup and skincare products), so I think my insistence upon a plain wedding band puzzles him.

I agree. I'm a super-thrifty person: I shop at Value Village, mend clothing when it is needed, use Groupons all the time. I am very cost-conscious.

That said, I LOVE jewelry and am willing to spend something for jewelry I enjoy and will wear every day. To me, spending $$$ on something you will enjoy each and every day for decades makes perfect sense.

Where did I say that I'm not a jewelry person? Jewelry as accessories, I completely get. Wanting something that's attractive and "pretty" is understandable. But I suppose for me, the whole concept of an engagement ring is rather batshit - and further, designating a pricetag as if it bears some relevance to worth of your relationship or love. It's perfectly possible to have and wear something "pretty" and "quality" without costing nearly so much, as the price of diamonds are one of the most blatantly artificial forms of price inflation - the pricetag truly bears no relevance to value. It's such a bizarre concept. And before someone pulls the "you're just jealous card" - I could easily go out and purchase more than a dozen 25k rings today, from readily available liquid assets. It seems just as frivolous as spending 25k on a bra, just because that's the random price someone sets for it.

Spent about $2k on fiancees.

No need to go crazy; it is nice and was custom cast to my design in platinum. Win/win

I've NEVER understood why women get so ugly about other womens' rings. I have a beautiful solitaire that is insured for $25k (I don't know how much DH paid for it) and a diamond wedding band to match. When we discussed marriage and DH asked about what kind of engagement ring I'd like, I said I loved the simple look of a solitaire but I would love whatever he chose. I think most people who know me see my rings as a little incongruous to my personality and lifestyle. So perhaps it makes me a hypocrite to say that I absolutely love them. Every time I look at them I think about our engagement, our marriage, and our commitment to each other. Plus, I find them to be aesthetically pleasing and that's meaningful to me, too. I don't care how much your rings cost, but I do hope they're meaningful to you like mine are to me.

That is how I felt. I travel to a lot of crazy places where security is an issue and I was scared to get a big ring. In retrospect I kind of wish I chose something a little bigger because the truth is I leave all my jewelry at home anyway and it would not have mattered....

ha ha ha ha! I would have totally refused to marry the future king of England if he had tried to cheap out and give me some old used ring. Next thing you know he would be trying to pass off some of the crown jewels and a push present!

I have an $8,000 engagement ring that my husband designed himself that is stunning and I got complimented on all the time. Wedding band matches and was about $2,000. I also have a $5,000 anniversary band I wear on my right hand. It is a 3 stone diamond ring. It may seem silly that I wear it every day but my husband bought it for me when we found out my cancer was in remission.

I won't complain though - I LOVE my ring. It was exactly what I wanted and more. It isn't huge, but it is very unique and very me. A huge rock would look ridiculous on my finger, anyway. It really is the only jewelry I ever wear, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

same here. he said he spent whatever bonus he earned when he was deployed to Iraq, which made me feel really guilty to this day. I guess at least it will never go down in value and someday it will go to my daughters.
