as opposed to a regressive girl? |
Yes, Indiana is very conservative. You need to research. |
Answering a question with a question: Perhaps, she would be open to Atlanta, Houston, Charlotte, Savannah, Raleigh, Miami, among others? Are they so different from the DMV that she wouldn’t consider them? |
Seriously. Nashville, Atlanta, Houston, Athens, Miami, New Orleans, Raleigh, Austin, Richmond, Dallas, and even Birmingham are all far more woke and liberal than the vast majority of communities in the Northeast or Midwest, especially the small towns where most Liberal Arts colleges are located. And of course liberal students from all over meet other liberal students at southern universities and eventually marry. I have two boys studying at universities in the south. They are both in serious relationships, one with a women from California and the other with a woman from Colorado. These are normal places with normal students doing normal things. Many study econ or engineering, go to football games, get into relationships, and follow jobs to NYC or SF or wherever and get on with life, like normal people do. People talk about the south like its North Korea or something. It's just another corner of America with its good and bad. |
| Are you the anti-Virginian OP? |
+1 My kid is at a SEC school. While they’ve met kids from all across the country, they are in a serious relationship with someone from the Deep South who is probably even more liberal than our family (and we are basically bleeding heart liberals). The bias and prejudice by blue state liberals on dcum is astounding. Even worse: your preferred M.O. of walling off red states is essentially why we landed in such a bad place—and why we won’t be able to fix the current situation. You can’t fix division by living in a bubble while throwing rocks at those you’ve erroneously assumed are uniformly bad. |
MD is very Asian. OR is hippy dippy and emo, but the state skews rural gun toting libertarian. |
| Your list is similar to my daughter’s list. Currently at UConn honors with significant merit, studying hard but also going to parties, bars, hoops games, hockey, and soccer and the occasional football game. Worth checking out. |
A conservative going to IU thinking it's conservative is going to be very disappointed. It's more liberal than MI or Wisconsin. Check voting records. Close to 85% democratic. That's Park Slope level |
Maybe by land area, but the bulk of the state's population lives in the Willamette Valley and is quite progressive. |

I think a big question is whether you have a kid who plans to stay on campus, or leave campus. Being part of a broader community, with people of all ages, was important to me in college. By the end of freshmen orientation, I had arranged a job, and a regular volunteer commitment in the community. I was visiting parts of my new city. Two of my kids will be also be accessing medical care in whatever community he ends up living in, due to a chronic issue. So, while the political climate on campus might be a factor, the political climate in the broader community, and the state matters too. I have 3 kids who will be going off to college in the next few years. For one of my kids, a red state would be a deal breaker. He would not look at Indiana. One of my kids will stay close to home, and one is considering schools around the country although he's more likely to pick Purdue, or Rose Hulman than IU based on his specific interests. Each kid will need to make their own decision. |
Jesus Christ. |
This isn’t far off which is why I suggested a visit up thread. UMD is going to be more familiar to a POC from NYC than Oregon. Same is somewhat true of CU Boulder, too. |
