This is what Edward Blum et al wanted and they got it. Of course, not the Asian part (they were just used as pawns) but the halving of Black and Hispanic enrollment.

I think “race war” is extreme. I think people are just going to move the goal posts. People are going to say the elite schools and the ivy’s don’t matter so their kids can still find their way into top jobs.

They will try but unless someone can make the argument that admission to the colleges are no longer a proxy for merit, this will not happen.

I would like to see college admissions be based on academic merit to a larger extent than they are now. If that leaves white Americans behind relative to Asians, we (I’m white) should try stepping up our game.

I would agree with cautious. Countries that admit students by grades only aren't necessary providing better opportunities to their youth. For STEM, academic merits are no brainer but I wouldn't take a person just grind very hard for good grades or cheat for good grades. There must be better ways to determine academic merits than just -tests!

Tests are the best measure we have. And peer reviewed research shows the results are valid

When that is the only measure though, massive cheating/gaming the system ensues.

A bit hard to cheat on SATs, and studying for the SATs is not "gaming the system". Do you think studying for the APs is " gaming the system"?

You would have to upend the entire American education system. Oxford interviews work so well, because they have GCSEs and essentially spend two years studying intensely on their subject exams. Each state would have to make small colleges that are tuition free, so students have enough resources for their major.

The biggest issue with America right now is too many people wanting it to be some other country. If you don’t like hustle and thinking creatively and are just flat and want a job from test scores, so many other countries are great for you, but not this one!

This is a common immigrant thing and a logical response from parents moving to a new country in search of better economic opportunities for their kids. And not just seen in Asian communities. see what the Nigerian immigrants’ kids are majoring in in college—I bet you they are encouraging respectable high paying professions like doctor, finance or law too. And Jewish immigrants from 1-2 generations ago. Same pressures and incentives. Not a race thing.

Well, it has to do with their family structure and the love that their parents have for them. The family prioritizes education and will sacrifice for the education of their children. It is hard for everyone in the family but they endure. Copy that in your own family and you will be successful too. Need to learn to sacrifice for the education of your children.

This is a common immigrant thing and a logical response from parents moving to a new country in search of better economic opportunities for their kids. And not just seen in Asian communities. see what the Nigerian immigrants’ kids are majoring in in college—I bet you they are encouraging respectable high paying professions like doctor, finance or law too. UM...maybe make sure that all students have to physically go to the nearest state flagship college and take entrance exams in all subjects using paper and pencil. No calculators or electronics allowed.

I would love to see the top students give a thorough thrashing to the loser students.

And then - make the results public. The colleges can then pick the best students from around USA.

OR make the subject SATs too. More testing and make the results public.
