Asian parent here. No For some reason, feel a little depressed to learn this. Most of the Asian concentrated schools end up becoming cutthroat and. suffocating. (at least that's what I've seen in high school) not sure about colleges
Exhibit A: It will become increasingly difficult for all those kids to land a spot in med school—or get local internships during the school year—given the new competition.
honestly, any cutthroat atmosphere comes about because asian students knew they were being held to a higher standard and have to beat out the other asian kids they are being compared to, as opposed to just belng in a general pool of applicants. It Becomes an arms race within the asian community. And the reason why savvy asian parents are now avoiding heavily asian school districts. Hopefully the Rollback of anti-asian affirmative action will decrease some of those unfair excessive pressures.
Yeah—and there’s also the odd idea of “saving face” for parents and justifying their investments 😄 A lot of social circles are built purely around bragging about high-achieving children. It often reflects parental insecurities and identity crises, especially among those who weren’t particularly successful in their own careers but I wonder these mom-gossipy groups aren't Asian only things.... it is just stupid instagram bragging or marketing or whatever thing
This is a common immigrant thing and a logical response from parents moving to a new country in search of better economic opportunities for their kids. And not just seen in Asian communities. see what the Nigerian immigrants’ kids are majoring in in college—I bet you they are encouraging respectable high paying professions like doctor, finance or law too. And Jewish immigrants from 1-2 generations ago. Same pressures and incentives. Not a race thing.
