curious-what do you think is typical cost of a regular haircut?

Anonymous
Everyone needs to eat. Your stylist has a set price of what they feel they’re worth. It’s up to you to decide if you agree, prior to booking.

Ask next time. You’re scandalized because you didn’t use your grown up voice to find out the price as part of scheduling your appointment.

Take the lesson.

Wow! You paid a lot. I have long, thick poorly behaved hair and it takes my stylist an hour or so from start to finish. The price is around $90 these days (plus 20% tip) and I thought that was a lot!

I think it should be about $20. But I also think gas should never be more than $2.

The reality is closer to $100 with tip for just a haircut.

I pay $300 plus tip. Color is usually an additional $300.

I was charged $120. And yes for a woman. Took her 10 minutes.

Outrageous! I would ask to see a breakdown of that price.

She works for herself. I guess she can charge whatever she wants. But I won’t use her again obviously. And yeah I get that it’s an easy cut. I have gotten this same cut in many places and even in the nicest places haven’t been charged that much. But lesson learned.

Didn’t you ask for an estimate first?

Who asks for an estimate for a haircut? It’s not a car repair.

You don't ask the price of the haircut? I mean, my salon lists it on their website and tells you when you book. What kind of weird salon are you going to where they're not telling you the price up front? And why aren't you asking for the price up front? Are you 30 and to scared to talk to people?

Op here. Wow there is really no need for the rudeness. I answered this upthread-This isn’t a salon it’s an individual person and she doesn’t have any prices listed. Obviously I know to always ask in this situation in the future but I honestly didn’t think to ask because I actually found her doing a local group search and seeing her mentioned when people asked for a great stylist at a reasonable price. So I was just expecting the usual pricing. Obviously the term “reasonable” is extremely subjective. But to answer your question I’m 45 and love to talk to people-just not rude ones such as yourself 🙂.

Again people who pay $300 for a standard haircut are doing it just so they can tell people they pay $300 for a haircut.

Holy crap. That used to be my $20 go to out of college when we were all broke.

They've gotten expensive. I go to Hair Cuttery now, which is about 50$ including tip.

Hair Cuttery is a scam that adds pricey upsells during the cut without warning. Don't go there. Plenty of other inexpensive honest chains and Independence.

Yes, my stylist moved somewhere in Tysons that charges $120, I went once because I love her, but it's too much. Previously she charged $85 and owned her own place, so I didn't even have to tip. Now $120+tip plus tipping the hair washer ends up $150+ and is outrageous

This has always been a question i’ve wondered-do you tip at all if the person owns their own business and is the only person?

I do not tip my sole proprietor because she owns her business - her name is listed as the business owner if you look it up. She rents her own retail space, she owns her own equipment, she buys her own products, she sets her own prices and it is just her from shampoo to blow dry. And she charges a lot for it. So nope, I don't tip. If she wants more money, she can increase the price. I do give her a Christmas present every year though and sometimes I bring her a cup of coffee if I have a morning appointment.

The reason to tip is to support the business if you are rich and they have clients who couldn't pay higher prices.

I paid $55 at Hair Cuttery yesterday for a shampoo and blow out before tip. Seemed like too much; if I’m paying that much I’ll just go to the nicer salon near my house from now on.

Grifters gonna grift. Sounds like the stylist took advantage of your not asking first.

I think this is what my daughter pays for a trim of her long hair that includes some long layers, a wash, and a standard blow dry. It’s a pretty nice place on tenleytown.

I started cutting my own hair during the pandemic and honestly can’t tell the difference. I also got my roots covered and am dongm that too, so am saving over a thousand a year. I really can’t tell the difference and it’s just more convenient not to have to leave work early, have to make an appointments weeks in advance when I don’t know my schedule, etc. I think my hairdresser was making a ton of money. She had a nice house as a young person and took awesome vacations. And only worked part time. I think she was making over $100 an hour just in tips and I’m sure wasn’t paying taxes on those as it was cash only.

Would love to know your stylist name!

Yeah, they have. My son wears his hair longer now (so no more barber) and I found a stylist at Hair Cuttery who I really like but definitely pricier than I am used to for his cuts. I go to a local salon and my stylist charges me the same for my hair ($35 plus tip), which I know is cheap and is the reason I keep going there. But for a 14 yo boy, $50 seems like a lot.

I recently paid $80 and thought it was a bargain. My previous girl was $100.

I'm not above going to the Hair Cuttery, etc but my last cut at one of those places was HORRIBLE so I've been afraid to return.

Once I went to my husband's barber for a trim. It was $20. Now my husband trims it at home. And when I return to my hometown of Paris, in France, I can get a nice haircut with some layers for less than 50 euros at a local salon (not a fancy chain), next to my parents' condo.

I avoid the DC area salons like the plague because they don't cut well AND they charge too much!

50 euros is 57 dollars. Which is in line with what a lot of folks are quoting here and a lot more than this $20 you are paying at the "barber."

All that stuff is cheaper in Europe: haircuts, manicures, dinner out
