Nope, Vincent Gray's Not Arrogant At All

Anonymous
I already stated it: Context is all. You pointed to the only Black candidate in this race and called him "my boy". In that context, it is offensive, to both me and at least one other poster. And you, my friend, are the ass.
Anonymous
First off, you do know that Gray is black... right?

Second off, YOU are the one who is ignoring context. You saw the word "boy" and jumped to a conclusion. I said, "your boy" as in, the person you prefer, like, support. Did you look at the links I posted? That demonstrate how that term "your boy" or "my boy" is used today, specifically with males of my generation?

No, why would you do that? You LOVE jumping to conclusions.

And I can't wait for you to spin your obvious wrong statement that Fenty is the only black candidate in the race.

Gray is not Black.

Oh really? Are you going to substantiate that? Or is that just your "gut feel"?

"Gray, 67, who is African American, will try to take advantage of black voters’ unease with Fenty, 39, while still reaching out to liberal white voters by noting his leadership role in enacting a same-sex marriage law and a 5-cent tax on disposable bags."

And this:
"While at George Washington, he became the first African-American admitted in the George Washington fraternity system, and in his junior and senior years, became the first person to serve consecutive terms as Chancellor of Tau Epsilon Phi."

Perhaps this thread should be about YOUR arrogance, whereby you deem yourself fit to decide who is and who is not black and what black people should be offended by.

You are getting into pretty dangerous territory. You have already been in such territory a few times in this discussion. I suggest that you take a couple of big breaths and rethink this type of post.

Jeff-

I hope PP was simply misinformed (as he/she has demonstrated a tendency to be) and is hopefully not actually implying that Gray doesn't "qualify" as black for one reason or another. Then again, earlier she did refer to Fenty as the "darker skinned" candidate, seemingly indicating that she recognized both as black. Maybe the information that he is black is "outdated" and thus "shitty". Oi vei.

Anonymous wrote:It seems your deliberately disrespectful and insulting post got deleted. It's really telling to see how you respond when challenged. Face it: you were wrong on this. It's okay. No one is expecting you to be right on everything. But I do think it's fair to expect you to not act like a complete ass. Even that appears to be too much.

Huh. Someone else agreed with me. So who's the complete ass?

One person agreed with you. No one else has. And then you made a blatantly offensive comment that was rightly deleted before I could respond.

Why can't you just admit you were wrong about my use of the term "your boy"? It's okay. No one is going to yell at you. No one is going to hit you. You still get to eat at the dinner table.

Oh, so if only one person agrees with me, and the majority conveniently sees it otherwise, I'm an ass? The majority opinion is always correct. That's a very scary proposition that leads to dangerous consequences. Read "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and get back to me as to whether we should always accept the majority opinion as correct.

No, you're an ass because you acted like an ass. You took a term that I used in a completely non-disparaging way and used it in a disparaging way, attempting to equivocate the two. That is why your comment was deleted. Because you were an ass.

No, the majority is not always right. But the issue is whether I offended anyone. No one has claimed to be offended. You acted offended on behalf of others and an individual (who obviously doesn't speak for that entire group but is the only person to explicitly weigh in from that group) from that group took offense to your patronizing attitude.

Again, you refuse to actually discuss the issue. Why was what I said offensive? Have you considered the arguments I've made to demonstrate that it was not? Have you looked at the dearth of offense taken? Or are you really that thickheaded that you can't possibly entertain the possibility that maybe, JUST MAYBE, you are wrong?

You have demonstrated a pattern of thinking in which you come to a conclusion and ignore all evidence to the contrary. You hold on to minor pieces of evidence, such as a single poster or a book completely unrelated to the topic at hand, to argue that maybe there is a sliver of hope that you are right, instead of just saying, "My bad. I was wrong on that one."

Wow, I left the site to do some real work and all this took place. I never saw the deleted message, so thankfully no response is required. So, can we now get back to the original topic, for it is currently toxic.

I saw it before it was deleted. It was something along the lines of, "You better watch how you talk to me, boy" directed at me, though used bizarre phrasing to make it about as offensive as possible while attempting to equivocate that statement with the way I used "your boy" earlier. Pure nonsense.

Still waiting for the poster-in-question to own up to his/her statement that Vince isn't black. Looks like he/she put his/her tail between his/her legs rather than admit that he/she might be wrong. The pattern continues...

Jeff...thanks for reminding me about the crash in Chevy Chase. Fenty was indeed driving that day. Fenty did in fact run the stop sign. The other driver, while not injured, was very dazed and confused. They were able to get him home (he lived pretty close to the crash site), but the car was a wreck.

The police report was fudged to claim no-fault, which was a complete and total crock. There should have been more journalistic and official investigation into that episode.
