So what is changing? Questions about SC affirmative action decision

No, but the rest of your application better back it up. In addition, if your last name is Wang, Cohen, Buyniski, etc, you better provide an additional explanation. Otherwise, you run the risk of appearing fraudulent. Denied!

Not sure why a wang, Cohen, or buynisky can't be African American on their mother's side. Or from grandparents. Didn't Elizabeth Warren show the whole country how it's done?

True, LOL

Another change already pointed out is that whites no longer have to lie about their ancestry DNA. A high percentage of whites have been claiming American Indian, or African American ancestry. It's pretty comical when you realize their ancestors were slave owners and/or took part in decimating indians.

Define best and brightest.

Use your common sense

My DD is applying as NB gender / asexual to get around this, and I think this is a good tactic. For everyone concerned I’d encourage looking at this as a way to get around this BS from SCOTUS.

Well, Wang and Cohen will have to show the admissions officers “how it’s done” in their essay if they want to be believed. You better talk about how having an AA mother affected your life. And you’ll need to demonstrate that in some believable way (organizational affiliation, travel, etc). Just saying you have an AA mom means nothing.

Talk about your only connection to Africa via DNA and your college application will be tossed. All of our ancestors originated in Africa. Being part something is not the same as being a part of something (culture, immediate family, etc).

Schools used the pandemic to roll out TO which will never go away and let schools obfuscate the same games.

Diversity makes everyone smarter and stronger (mentally). I don't need to be in a class with 30 other people just like me. I want to learn from other people's experiences and perspectives. And I want that for my kids as well. This is true in engineering as well as humanities. You don't know what you haven't lived.

As Thomas noted in his concurrence, nobody (not even Harvard in this case) has been able to explain or quantify any educational benefit from diversity.

And in engineering, diversity is totally irrelevant. The bridge stays up, the plane flies, or not, regardless of the race of the engineer who designed them.

Not true at all.

Also, all the "PC" posters and anti- diversity posts on this site in general lately make me wonder if there aren't some political (maybe paid, maybe just trolling) posters here. Wish we could see who posts again and again.

It's wishful thinking. I've seen the infamous McKinsey study, which is highly dubious and preached to the choir without offering anything substantive. Like this SCOTUS ruling, most people just saw the headlines and never read the ruling itself.

After all, history and the modern world show us highly homogenous societies with high degrees of accomplishment. It's very difficult to show that diversity improves outcomes beyond in limited areas. In most instances it's a moot point. I don't speak as someone who is against diversity as accomplished people come from all races and all walks of life, but the idea that a "diverse" group will have a better outcome than a homogenous group is disingenuous and not based on any meaningful quantitive data. After all, a group of multiple different ethnicities can (and often do) share the identical views and think in lockstep (hi progressive bubbles!) while groups that are homogenous on paper due to everyone being white or Asian can be hugely diverse in outlook and backgrounds.

This doesn’t make any sense, and provides a perfect example of the type of mediocrity that is considered serious thinking by the DCUM crowd.

To state the obvious, comparing societies that are largely homogeneous to those that are culturally diverse is like comparing oranges to apples. Our diversity considerations stem from the (gasp) shocking idea that everyone in society should have the equal AND equitable opportunity to reach their highest potential. In the US “everyone” looks a lot different than in Japan.

Here’s a shocker, quantitive data is not the only data point that counts. There are many qualitative studies which prove that diverse teams are stronger, and make better decisions (look it up, I’m not going to do the work for you grifters)

Finally, in response to the sad comment by a PP about diversity being irrelevant in engineering *sigh*, when a bridge collapses, a plane malfunctions, systems shut down why is that? Is it because (maybe, possibly) group think and lack of difference of opinion/experiences led to engineering failures that could’ve been avoided? How does race solve for that you ask? Well, turns out that your culture and language impacts the way you think/process information and reason, your race is intrinsically linked to who you are, it can’t be separated or pushed outside because you’re shaped by it.

Point is, go read a book, educate yourself instead of just posting uninformed nonsense you think sounds really smart.

Does PC= politically correct or people of color?

Regardless, UC’s are world class and have more diversity than any other major university system. White students are a minority making up 20% or so of the population at UCLA and Berkeley. White college-age and high school-age students are a minority in CA, so the 20% figure isn’t strange. The UC system’s priority is delivering a superior education to a state population that is diverse and multiethnic.

CA Proposition 209 bans affirmative action. Google what effect this has had on minority population at UC.

It’s gotten more diverse. I’m not sure what facts you think I’m missing? Just share info if you have something to share.

Sounds like Biden Admin is now rolling out federal initiatives to support diversity in high education to counter this ruling.

Will never support the GOP, but maybe he should spend more time on women’s health and access to healthcare after roe and wade.

We can always look to Ms. Pocahontas to figure out how it's done.

More than 30% of white applicants lied about their ancestry DNA, mostly claiming to be another pokahontas.

Affirmative Action, like abortion, is a liberal totem that was never to be changed. And when it is, the wailing and gnashing of teeth is deafening.
