Agreed. I came here about 15 years ago and watched the county steadily get worse. Especially the middle class areas of the county. The wealthier areas like Potomac and Bethesda seem to do better. But the middle class neighborhoods have been overrun with slum landlords and the school system is definitely seeing the ill effects of being a sanctuary county.

We moved to PG, ironically. Cashed out of our MoCo house, bought a nicer home w/out a mortgage, send our kiddos to private schools. PG doesn't have that weird woke political stuff either.

What? I moved to MoCo from Hyattsville and it felt like I moved into a conservative stronghold compared to how liberal Hyattsville is.

Hyattsville, Mount Rainier, Greenbelt, College Park, Takoma Park, Downtown Silver Spring. That's the DC suburb's Socialist Bloc. They should all secede and form their own county like Che Guevara County or something and elect Marc Elrich as its Mayor for Life, and let the rest of us laugh.

Did I miss the time that Marc Elrich proposed state control of industrial production? Or maybe you never received any actual education regarding the specific characteristics of a communist state and that explains your confusion?

You did miss the part where Elrich invited socialists in from Venezuela for advice.

No actually Venezuela never sent anyone to MoCo to give advice. Nice try. All you have is innuendo? Do communists usually keep quiet about their beliefs? He is secretly trying to take over MoCo businesses?

BTW inviting a diplomat to visit the county still doesn’t make anyone a communist. Advocating for communist policy is what makes someone a communist. Show me the legislation.

You really believe your own stupidity, don’t you?

Stupidity? You’re the one making claims that you can’t back up. The word “communism” has an actual meaning and you can’t demonstrate a single communist policy that Elrich has enacted. You’re just spreading disinformation.

Keep on trying to spin, clown:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/11/AR2007101102217.html

Funny how that link still doesn’t speak to a single communist policy proposal by Elrich.

The article is from 2007 and explains how no such meeting ever took place.

“Elrich said that local nonprofit groups interested in meeting with Bernardo Alvarez, Venezuela's ambassador in Washington, would still do so, although not with the help of the county.

"It needs to take place under a different umbrella so there's no confusion that Montgomery County is taking a position on the Venezuelan government," he said.”

And then that quote clearly shows the same Elrich that you accuse of wanting to turn MoCo “communist” is taking extra care to NOT associate the MoCo government with the Venezuelan government.

If a 15 year article with no policy proposals and no actual meetings with communists is all you’ve got then it’s probably safe to say that there is no valid evidence of Elrich being a communist.

Seriously, the right wingers are working triple overtime in trying to create hysteria and fear mongering.

Back on topic the hate crime involving the pride flags seems to be getting a lot more attention from elected officials than the violent crimes. It’s too bad we don’t have serious people in government anymore.

Seriously. The wealthy, hypocritical progressive liberals in MoCo are working overtime to ensure their influx of cheap labor.

I mean, the only people benefiting from the influx of undocumented immigrants are the business owners who want to pay crap wages and the wealthy housewives who new their cheap housecleaners and nannies.

Sigh.

Of course it is.

But let’s try to think this through:

Texas is a border state. Has always been a border state. And it’s always had a large Latino population.

MoCo’s demographics starting slowly shifting after welcoming Salvadorans in the 70s. Immigration steadily but slowly increased overtime.

MoCo’s demographics today are tipping the scales with Latinos becoming the majority.

While drugs/gangs used to be a black-related thing decades ago, in moco it’s a Latino thing. There are special task forces and resources funded by the county to address the issue.

There are very real school issues that are well documented by mcps reports over the last 20 years. The shifting demographics are well documented as are the issues.

We aren’t Texas yet. But how much time do you spend in Glenmont? Germantown?

You know it’s bad when newcomer Latinos are leaving certain areas in search of safer neighborhoods and schools.

I’m not sure why the county isn’t taking notice and trying to do more…particularly as affluent Dems are leaving the county or simply dying of old age. The county is losing its tax base and it isn’t replacing it with newcomers and 1st and 2nd Gen Latinos who tend to work in cash based businesses.

Then stop using Texas as a model to fix Maryland

I read this post as an explicit warning not to fellow Texas. I don’t read it in any way as proposing Texas as a model. Texas is still a red state because it has a huge geographic space with conservative rural and suburban voters. This paradigm doesn’t apply to Maryland. The above poster makes some good points, even if they disrupt the confirmation biases of many.

100% correct. The pride flag destruction was awful, but....perspective people. A lot of people got shot, stabbed, carjacked, and robbed this past weekend. I think maybe two councilmembers mentioned the actual violence. Upcounty councilmembers

Sad. I've been here since 1990 and I don't even recognize it anymore. It used to be such a great county. Now, just another PG.

Agree. It's losing it is rapidly losing sophistication and prestige thanks to all this crime. Sad!

Yes, I know places like Florida and Texas have benefited enormously from this cheap labor. Who do you think builds those new homes in FL and TX? More seriously, those undocumented immigrants benefit everybody as they help drive the economy. And, further, those "wealthy, hypocritical progressive liberals" tend to support higher minimum wages, stronger union rights, stronger worker protections, etc, all of which are opposed by your apparent tribe.

Today a young hispanic male stabbed 4 people off Viers Mill, prompting MCPD to shoot and kill him. Wonder if he is an undocumented immigrant?

The race of the suspect has not been reported, as far as I'm aware. Can you provide a source for that bit of information? A neighbor got a photo of the guy from the back. It's in this news story:

DP

But that neighborhood (including the streets named, eg, Colie and Havard) is 100% Latino.

Anyone care to attempt to counter this argument?

Seems spot on.
