The majority of the crime (including violent crime) in MoCo is concentrated in certain areas. The annual crime report has heat maps that make it clear who is committing the bulk of the crime.
Interestingly, the Latinos with the economic wherewithal to move out of SS, Gburg and Gtown are starting to move. They don’t want their kids getting sucked into the criminal activity…this is precisely why they moved here in the first place. They are moving to the far flung burbs (Olney, Damascus) and counties. And crime is starting to creep out there. |
The crime rate in Texas is higher than MD. |
Sigh. Of course it is. But let’s try to think this through: Texas is a border state. Has always been a border state. And it’s always had a large Latino population. MoCo’s demographics starting slowly shifting after welcoming Salvadorans in the 70s. Immigration steadily but slowly increased overtime. MoCo’s demographics today are tipping the scales with Latinos becoming the majority. While drugs/gangs used to be a black-related thing decades ago, in moco it’s a Latino thing. There are special task forces and resources funded by the county to address the issue. There are very real school issues that are well documented by mcps reports over the last 20 years. The shifting demographics are well documented as are the issues. We aren’t Texas yet. But how much time do you spend in Glenmont? Germantown? You know it’s bad when newcomer Latinos are leaving certain areas in search of safer neighborhoods and schools. I’m not sure why the county isn’t taking notice and trying to do more…particularly as affluent Dems are leaving the county or simply dying of old age. The county is losing its tax base and it isn’t replacing it with newcomers and 1st and 2nd Gen Latinos who tend to work in cash based businesses. |
Kristin Mink says teens are carjacking people because they need more reliable transportation home from school. |
See? I told you we are f’ed. |
You can ask her about the most violent, terrible crime imaginable and her response will be something along the lines of, "We need more social workers!" |
To be fair, gang issues are only 1/2 of the issue. We also have a lot of low SES folks moved in for county benefits. Troubles come with that too. |
Then stop using Texas as a model to fix Maryland |
?? wut?? -dp |
Need a source for this or at least an explanation of what “county benefits” you are talking about. |
Source? Sounds like made up trollbait |
This was during an online neighborhood town hall about two months ago. I don't think it was recorded, but I'll check. |
Metro death spiral. |
I don’t doubt that she said it. Totally on brand for her. |
