Wtf are you even talking about? |
Go drive down those streets. They are relatively small streets. That neighborhood is latino. Perhaps the census tracks owners/landlords rather than renters? And the census tract goes beyond those streets and immediate adjacent streets. I know the area very well. |
No. The Census counts residents. The boundaries of the Census tract are Veirs Mill Road, the stream valley, and Connecticut Avenue. 1,559 housing units, of which 1,520 were occupied. 5,871 people total. 3,312 Hispanic, 837 non-Hispanic white, 559 non-Hispanic black, 934 non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islander, 229 non-Hispanic other. Also, even with the Hispanic population likely younger than the non-Hispanic population, the demographics for Sargent Shriver ES in 2022-2023 were: 78.6% Hispanic, 11.3% non-Hispanic Black/African-American, 5.7% non-Hispanic Asian-American, and less than 5% everyone else. So, lots of people who are Latino? Yes. 100%? Nowhere near. Maybe driving down those streets doesn't give you as good an understanding of the area as you thought? |
2020 census? Probably a bit out of date. The local elementary school is nearly 80% Latino. The rest are black and Asian—mostly immigrants. The neighborhood will continue to fill with Latinos…just like the neighborhood on the other side of CT Ave that feeds into Weller Road Elementary. |
I think the 2020 Census data are more accurate than "When I drive down the street, everyone I see looks Latino to me." In 2019-2020, the 744 students at Sargent Shriver ES were 78.9% Hispanic, 10.9% non-Hispanic Black, 5.9% non-Hispanic Asian-American, and <5% for the other categories. In contrast, in 2022-2023, the 734 students at Sargent Shriver ES were ... 78.6% Hispanic, 11.3% non-Hispanic Black, 5.7% non-Hispanic Asian-American, and <5% for the other categories. |
I took the red line home at 8:30pm on a weekday after a work event. Security officers everywhere. But still, 4 youth got on at Catholic University, shouting & harassing riders in a mostly empty middle car. Felt unsafe & intimidated. Next day read in newspaper about the shooting at ft Totten metro.
Newly elected councilwoman Stewart is a severe disappointment. I expected closer attention to the needs of constituents but you can't even get a response from her office. Won't be voting for her again. |
I can't imagine why Councilmember Stewart isn't concerning herself with the issues around Catholic University? |
I celebrate diversity and its not worth mentioning during the normal course of ones day. However crime is a different matfer and race does play a rule in it. The wokeness of ignoring it is the problem and will always call it out when I see it. |
Well I have lived around there my whole life and you are wrong. |
That area was a bit rough even when it was majority white. Get out of here with your assumptions. |

+1 That PPs example is stupid. |
Why is crime a different matfer? How does race play a rule in it? Please do explain how the police news release did a disservice to the residents of Montgomery County by not immediately labeling the race/ethnicity of the man the police had just killed. |
MoCo and some of our media's wokeness is the problem, Karen. The scanner called the subject a hispanic male and its now confirmed. When someone brings up the race card in their daily acrivities, it magnifies the DEI issue of the left. The 'disservice' is ignoring the tragedy and focus on an agenda just like the 'white hispanic' in the Trayvon Martin tragedy. I subscribe to the MLKjr methodology of the contact of their character, not the color of their skin. MoCo's sanctuary city policy is ruining this county and wonder if Franklin Castro Ordonez is undocumented? |
