UMD>>>>>>>>>UVA

Uva and mich are so easily triggered. It kills them they aren’t Ivy level. Their king crap of turd mountain status is always in jeopardy and their second-rate alumni are ever-grasping for semi-respect.

Depends on whether the extra $20k per year is significant to you.

CS majors don’t go graduate school

Right, that’s why there are no graduate programs in CS.

UMD has a superior CS program but most kids fail out of CS, it will feel more “prestigious” when he switches major and is at Michigan.

If you care what others think Michigan.

If you want to make the best decision UMD .

But CS combined with Law = Patent attorney

Almost nobody can do the combo

Both of these schools will have similar companies recruiting from them.
CS majors go to grad school if they want to progress. Non-founders who lead tech companies or are even senior manager+ have gone to grad school.
CS grad schools are a great way for international students to come for 1-2 years (so not pay too much) and then automatically get the right to work in the US. They are great for students and schools (full pay students entering high paying fields).

Put the extra money in retirement fund

Except, what if the student decided to switch majors, which is very common? Still think that high OOS cost for UMD is worth it?

UMich has the same problem.

With the rise of GenAI, I'd expect advanced education to become more important in CS. The best large companies have internal education systems and research, so you wouldn't technically need to go to a degree program if you work there. Outsiders would though and they'll have a leg up job market wise with specialized knowledge and skill.

That’s why it’s probably ridiculous to spend that much money to attend either school full pay from out of state.

Your kid in the school doesn't make it special.

UMD for fall 2024 has stopped the easy internal transfer to the CS school. Don’t you think students will not be much more likely to pass the CS classes? It’s now 600 direct admit freshmen and 100 total transfers to CS Department. Last year it was 450 direct admit freshman class but unlimited transfers.
