UMD vs U Michigan CS major

Compared to other programs at UMD, CS is tops. CS at Michigan is just another highly ranked program at a school of dozens of them.
Michigan is the total package for an undergraduate. If you can afford the premium, your student will definitely have an enhanced and memorable experience.

CS majors don’t go graduate school

They do.

Michigan is miserable cold. Nothing to do outside of Ann Arbor.

Has your child visited MI and MD? They have such different feels, that it should be an obvious and easy choice (assuming $$ isn't an issue)

I'm all for Sergey here in the DMV but majors can change and UM is the better overall school.

+1 One co-founder of Google went to Maryland. The other went to Michigan. Take your pick. I like Maryland's location better, too, but there's not much to dislike about Michigan.

Well, college park is just miserable. I’d go Michigan if I could afford it and not think twice.

OP,
we were at UM last week on a college visit and learned that because CS is the most popular major, UM is rationing the number of majors.
If your DC did not indicate CS major they are NOT GUARANTEED.
I think UMD has similar rationing (but only done once you enroll, and may be based on first year grades)

How come noboby talks about Michigan CS? Lot of talk about how great MD CS is.

^^^Ummm where do you live? Of course around here everyone discusses UMD.

how so?

Also, would your DC be ok with extreme winter weather?

Someone on this forum said that #11 and #17 isn't that big of a difference. This was in relation to a discussion about CS at UVA vs UMD.

Also, the list has Princeton at #5, above CalTech and MI.

I would not go by USNWR.

You’re right about the cold but there are lots of things to do in Michigan outside of AA. Detroit is 40 mins away, Canada is 10 mins more, and you have lakes and camping galore. Michigan has great food too.

Let your DC choose. They’re both fine schools.

It is hard to say at this age I know, but if your child wants to live in the DMV after school, MD. Otherwise, MI. MI alum here- I have lived in Europe, Asia, CA, east and west coasts and my degree opened a lot of doors for me with just the brand name. Only place that did not recognize the name as prestigious was the mid-south/south because they worshipped auburn, bana and sewaner. Never had plans to stay there long term though.
