With Ivy day disappointing decisions, DC is left with two main choices UMD and U Michigan (both oos). UVA in-state result is waitlisted.
Any thoughts on these two schools for Computer Science major. It seems tuition difference is 38k vs 55k. Based on what I gathered, both have solid CS programs and outcomes post-graduation are not much different. Even if it isn't a major issue finances, does the cost differential makes sense to choose Michigan? |
Michigan is so much more of an experience than a simple major-alumni network not to be beat and A2 so much nicer than College Park! No Brainer IMO.- Signed-Ann Arbor alum |
You need to decide, Is it worth 80K more (4 years, including travel). If you have the money saved, let them pick which school. |
If it’s not too much of a financial burden, I’d pick Michigan. Better alumni connections and more of a well rounded college experience. |
UMich CS is more rigorous, maybe too much so. |
UMD and use the extra to pay for graduate school. UMD is an excellent school. |
UMD is top for CS. |
For CS, Maryland is the better choice, but, if you need to get farther away from home, then Michigan. |
CS majors don’t go graduate school |
FWIW US News has Michigan CS tied at #11 with four other schools. U Maryland CS is tied at #17. |
For Michigan CS? Yes. What does your kid prefer? |
Id go with Michigan if you can do it without debt. So much to offer there as pluses over UMD. Huge network and more brand name. Plus it’s more ‘polished’ in sports . Plus some other amazing departments if CS doesn’t pan out |
Yes, they do. |
Not if they have any sense. |
Larry (UM) or Sergey (UMD? Classic Google question.
I'm all for Sergey here in the DMV but majors can change and UM is the better overall school. |
