PP said 1st gen, not URM. Your bias is showing. News flash, white people can be 1st gen.

Still a chance! Good luck.

DD accepted. TO, 3.97 GPA. Business. IB and AP courses.
I don’t think she thought she’d get in. Was accepted at JMU, I think she feels conflicted. Wants to be closer to home. Any advice??

My DD was also accepted to JMU and VT and had a hard time deciding. She loved both schools, but ultimately chose VT because they had the exact major she wanted. Tough choice! Good luck.

TECH all the way! It has better nationwide recognition an more options. And, come on...hokie nation!! Enter Sandman...

I can honestly say this because I went to Tech as an undergrad and then got a stipend to go to JMU for grad school and transferred out after a year. Not a fan. I have a nephew who is a senior at JMU now and it is such a party school now, insanely so. He can't wait until graduation. He's done.

From this area, there are so many kids to ride home with and always a carpool seat available.

WL from VT, Good EC, Intern jobs, part time jobs. First time SAT 1550. On the other hand, UMD awarded the president's 40K scholarship, direct admit to CS major

Did something drastic and devastating happen to your financial situation between November and now? If your financial situation is basically the same as it was 3 months ago, and you already knew she wouldn't go even if offered a spot, why apply?

Don’t owe you an explanation, but she applied far and wide and has been looking for scholarships too. We had no idea she would even get into UMD when she applied early action to VT. DH and I have 5 VT degrees between us, and we love it there so we were happy to pay the fee for her to apply there. But no, we don’t plan to pay $200k+ for an undergrad degree when UMD is cheaper and has a higher-ranked program.

That still doesn’t explain why you had her apply if you had no intent to send her. You knew she wasn’t getting a scholarship

It is called safety school.

Its needs to be a financial safety too. This was not a safety.

So, would you DC have chosen VT? Unlikely, especially if in state MD. Thus the deferral.

DP. I love VT and have a student there right now who is in love with the school, but come on. You are wildly overexaggerating about JMU, where two of my kids went. One of them is quite an introvert yet he still met "his people" at JMU and loved it. You don't have to be a partier to enjoy the school, not in the least.

I’m sorry things didn’t go your way, but the sour grapes is not a good luck. Your issue is not with the VA kid that was waitlisted or the MD kid that got in. College admissions is a hot mess in 2023. Relax, and just tell your kid how proud you are of their character and their hard work. Trust that things will work out.

DD (white, applied as sociology major) in with 3.93 weighted and 1150 SAT (not submitted). A little surprised after reading this forum. We’re thrilled for her.

Loudoun County.
