Good luck to everyone! I know there are going to be some very, very high-stats kids, with great applications who will not be admitted. I hope the parents of these outstanding kids will help them focus on the other schools where they did get admitted.

VT is very tough. Good luck!

Yes, there's bound to be plenty of disappointment. But don't worry about "very, very high-stats kids" as they will have lots of other options, including schools ranked higher than VT. It's the kid whose heart is set on VT but won't have such options that will really need some support.

Don’t handwave this away.
Uh, no, some VIRGINIA RESIDENT TAXPAYING parents can’t afford “lots of other options” and rely on getting their high-stats ENGINEERING-major kids into the COMMONWEALTH’s polytechnic because IN-STTE CoA is what the families can comfortably afford

AMEN. The kid who is dedicated to engineering and/or CS and has VT as the top option in-state and who has worked hard for the past 12 years excelling in school and on standardized test but who gets shut out due to DEI (making the school 40% URM BS) or bc VT thinks it is their safety is who I am thinking of. These kids are the ones who will be hurt the most. VT is playing with social engineering with my tax dollars and I know plenty of people who refuse to even apply because of how they have handled admissions in the past few years.

You have a very valid point, with which I agree. But until now, this thread was not just about engineering at VT, but applications to the school as a whole. And most kids applying to VT do not major in engineering.

Seems like there are relatively few engineering majors these days, and nearly all CS majors.

CS majors have GMU and JMU as options in state. I know it's not the same as VT, but there ARE in-state options for kids who want CS, and even engineering. Get over the "oh GMU is so lame" mindset.

NP. You do realize that just about EVERY university in the US is focused on DEI and gaining URM/1st gen students, right? The only difference is that VT is transparent about it and has never tried to hide this fact. UVA, etc. - they all do the same thing but don't expect them to tell you about it. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but your anger at this one school is misplaced. In addition, URM/1st gen still have to have the stats to get in. It's just one data point that might push them into the accepted pile.

You should be calling out ALL the schools which do this.

Really wish my NOVA, unhooked son would have at least applied. So freaked out during admissions research. 4.5, 1560, NMSF for CS at THE state tech school. Seemed natural.

That's what I told him! No number 1. Applied to 12 others EA and RD instead.
