Daycare Covid policy vent

Thanks for sharing this info! I ended up calling the licensing office today (did NOT provide the name of my daycare) just to get clarity on what the actual rules are vs what’s up to our provider’s discretion. It turns out the fact that they refuse to allow parents inside the facility is a licensing violation, and has been since MARCH when the licensing agency contacted all the daycares to let them know this Covid rule had expired. Maryland requires childcare facilities to give parents access without an appointment any time their child is being cared for. Our kid had their birthday party well after the restrictions were lifted, and my husband and I asked if we could be there and were denied access. And it might be stupid, but realizing they denied us that opportunity, especially when they have no right to, makes me really sad. We’re looking elsewhere, but I’m also going to talk to some of the other parents. - OP

I'm glad I could help. When I replied to you I even forgot about mentioning that parents could now enter, and that's a big deal. Did you follow up with your daycare? I hope they come to their senses.

Not the OP, but while our daycare doesn't officially require masks anymore, they're always saying that masks are "strongly recommended", on signs, emails, and to your face if you dare to bring in your kid without one. They say it's what the county/state recommends, but I really think they are just making it up, because it was my understanding that it's only recommended when we are in "high" community levels? And it's so blatantly hypocritical because I'll often see staff with the masks off or under their noses.

You are right.

From MSDE:
"For community settings including school and child care programs, the CDC recommends
universal indoor mask wearing only at the high COVID-19 Community Level."

MSDE and MCHD have both made it very clear that recommendations and guidance are not mandates. So even at the high level it's not required/mandated. As always, they can impose their own rules but they should not blame it on the state or county.

Ours is like this too, but it’s a very old building with old HVAC systems so I think they are trying to compensate for that. And it seems the majority of the parents favor it, several kids in my DS’ class had Covid last month and the parents aren’t even giving them a masking break during this post-Covid time of high immunity!

You are totally wrong that PCR tests are not recommended! You are part of the denial loop. People who gave up about Covid are not bothering to test which is keeping this virus rampant.

The at home tests do not pick up the strain of Covid early. No entity should accept an at home test for proof of a negative.

The day care was wrong for failing to timely notify you.

You can say this until you are blue in the face, but below is a link to Kaiser Permanente's guide for when to get a PCR test. If you're too lazy to click on the link (my guess is you are), it basically says don't bother with a PCR unless your doctor tells you you need one, or it's being required for an event or activity.

Who cares about Kaiser Permanente? When did they become the CDC?

Well they are my medical provider and determine when I can access PCR tests so I care. But sure, I bet they are going rogue against public health guidance and can just ignore them since it doesn't fit with your world view.

Can’t you go to a county or city testing site? Just say you don’t have insurance, they arent going to turn you away.

Last time I did county testing I never got results back. No thanks

Weird. Which county? We’ve gone to the MoCo testing sites many times and have never had that issue. Time to put your thinking cap on and figure out something else then I guess. Best of luck!

What’s the turnaround time for county PCRs? It’s often been around 3 days. I’m not keeping my kids home for 3 days on the chance that the test comes back positive.

Actually no because our daycare keeps current with public health guidance and does not require PCRs to return to care.

You have to pay for a same day test elsewhere if you want fast PCR results. Jesus people, after 2 years who doesn’t know all this by now?

I’m well aware of that, given that I’ve had to drop well over $1000 on PCRs at Sameday. I'm just pointing out why the county sites aren't a practical option for kids in child care or school.

I can’t believe daycares are still requiring same day PCR results, or expect parents to be out 2 to 3 days waiting for county run results. It is unrealistic to expect parents to pay so much to get same day results or miss so much work. The people who are impacted the most are lower income families. It is 2022 and we know so much more about the virus than we did back in 2020/21 when we were being much more cautious.

I have always believed and held that it is a businesses right to have its own policies. But I also think that now that we know so much more parents should start voicing their complaints and even working together with other parents in your centers to get policies updated.

+1. I gripe about my center’s indefinite masking policy, but thankfully they got on board with accepting rapid test results. Plus rapid tests are so much easier to find (and often free) than last winter. Haven’t had to get a PCR in months.

Anonymous wrote:OP here - we got the updated COVID policy from daycare today. Our rules include:

- everyone over 2 wears a mask, regardless of vaccination status
- no parents in the building, and no line allowed outside the building. Parents must wait in their car if another parent is at the door for pickup/drop off
- kids can’t come to school if they, or anyone else in the family, has one or more of these symptoms: fever, coughing, runny or stuffy nose, difficulty breathing, headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, or vomit
- if the kid has the above symptoms, they need a PCR to come back
- if we go out of town, the entire family needs to take rapid tests before the kid can come back
- we have to notify the daycare of a positive COVID case in the house (definitely reasonable)
- we have to notify the daycare if anyone in the house was exposed to COVID, regardless of test results

This is not what we agreed to when we enrolled. We’re going to start looking for a new daycare… unless this is just normal in the DMV?

My infant just started at a reputable facility in upper NW and we don't have these extreme policies (the PCR test for cold symptoms, staying home if a relative has cold symptoms, etc). He's ok to come in with a cold. They have parents wear masks in the building.
