Yes, that is true. The County recreation department offers a ton of wonderful programs for special needs students.

But bocce is not something that MCPS should have spent its Covid money on.

I beg to differ. Bocce is a far better use of funds than spending the millions and millions of astroturf for football fields. This is something that all children can enjoy.

Both are really poor spending choices. Neither are covid related.

Maybe the central admin thought getting bocce equipment is a good use of funds because they’d be start up costs as opposed to something they’d need to sustain. That doesn’t mean it’s the best use, but that might be the reasoning.

They will need to sustain bocce ball. How about upgrading the schools with better ventilation, fixing roofs, windows, doors, hallways, extra cleanings? How about more reading specialists, speech therapists, OT's, etc? How about more funding for virtual academy so they can have an equal experience and offer it to more families? How about more mental health therapists since parents and MCPS are screaming how bad covid was to their kids mental health?

I have to disagree. I feel it's one of the best things they've spent money on and decades.

While I fail to see why bocce is one of the best things they’ve spent money on in decades, I’m willing to consider that maybe I’m missing something. However, if it was of such great value, MCPS should have budgeted its own funds for it (PE, sports, etc.). If MCPS managed without bocce for decades, then COVID did not disrupt our bocce status. The money was meant to offset the damage wrought by COVID, which does not include bocce

I tried to teach my kids that there is a difference between needs and wants. Just because you want something badly doesn’t make it a need. Needs have to be prioritized, but then if you’re careful, you can decide which wants to achieve. They may want ice cream, shiny new toys, etc., but they don’t need them. MCPS has to learn the difference between needs and wants. This is why I never support additional funding for MCPS. They go for the shiny new toy every time.

I know! I have to agree spending a few dollars per student to introduce them to a wonderful game like bocce was money well spent! These people complaining about it seem to have a grudge against people of Italian descent.

What does Italian descent have to do with anything? The Board of Education used COVID-19 pandemic emergency funds to buy sports stuff and ignored doing anything to address the pandemic. ADD is really prevalent, but try to focus. Other school systems are vastly ahead of addressing the indoor ventilation issues that are known to be crucial in stopping the spread of COVID-19. The Board of Education is years behind now and they wasted the dedicated funding on luxury items.

This!

My kids enjoyed the unit on bocce so I think it was money well spent.

What grade are your kids in? My kids haven’t had bocce yet and they are in ES and MS.

Maybe the school already had a set. We haven't seen a set either.

Forest got the trees people! Imagine if I said Trump gave money to a museum where his wife would later become Director of Communications, you would cry foul. Then if Trump’s cabinet member who was receiving millions in funding to found this museum via his wife later was selected to replace a Cabinet member who died in office you would be equally horrified.

Both of these things happened with kid museum. Yet because these people are liberals (my theory) defending a failed system you adore (Public school) you are blinded, it seems, by their poor ethics. Need an IG for MCPS stat but you will say the IG is too expensive!

My kids also had a blast. It was money well spent. Also, never been to the kid museum but if it's as fun as bocce count me in.

They were bought for SN kids, not general PE. However, clearly they were not equitably distributed.

Oh, I disagree completely. The PP is absolutely correct. This demonstrates the complete hypocrisy of some liberals.

Nice try. The question on the table is whether this is money well spent and I am showing you the corruption in MCPS. It’s in a Bethesda for a reason! Cognitive dissonance much?

Where they locate themselves is not the issue. However given the space they need going to one of the most expensive areas/spaces seems absurd. MCPS should be getting free programing from them if they are giving them that much money. It makes zero sense when it is not helping MCPS students and at best, a select few. We all know the corruption and its everywhere, not just MCPS but sadly no one is able or willing to do anything about it.
