How to handle birthday gifts? Tacky to ask ‘no gifts’?

My kid LOVES opening presents and I wish there was a way to impose price limits on people. He would be completely happy with a pack of PlayDoh or a sudoku book. And yes I'm having the cheap playground party.

So buy and wrap a bunch of cheap gifts for your child and still make your party “no gifts”.
