Husband Always Walks Way in Front of Me

Anonymous
I am in shape enough to walk city blocks. This has been an issue with my husband for the last twenty years, although we are indeed both getting older. I am finding some of these questions and comments kind of baffling.

It really isn't, it's painful, especially when you have naturally longer stride, it hurts my hips to slow down for slow people. That said given that OP is currently recovering, her husband she at least make an effort to match her pace.

If this is the case, then you have some issues with your hip. You should go see a doctor.

My DH has bad hips, and it doesn't hurt his hip to walk at a slower speed. It does hurt if he is standing/walking for too long.

Did you never take walks with your child? Did you just drag your kid along so you could walk at your speed?

Exactly, this is bull. Your stride and your pace are two different things.

My kid has always been faster than me, so no need for them to keep up, but when I do have to slow down for my elderly mother it hurts to take the smaller and slower steps.

I suspect OP is leaving something out of the story, like she was too stubborn and prideful to get a post-op wheelchair.

I am not too prideful to get a wheelchair. I wore a surgical boot for several months, as the doctor directed, and now I am walking in sneakers, as the doctor directed. I was never told to use a wheelchair at any point. And my foot surgery is relatively recent. This has been occurring for twenty years.

I’m 5’4 and my husband is a couple inches taller. I’m a fast walker and he used to keep up with me, but now we’re both out of shape and the result on his side is slowing down. Having to walk slowly is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. I have one friend that I try to avoid walking with because she’s unbelievably slow (yet a runner. I don’t get it.) Have found it annoying to walk with my mom since I was a teenager because she’s so slow (same height). It’s depressing that my husband has now joined their ranks.

She already admitted that she is overweight.

I really don’t think that ten extra pounds is an issue here.

Sorry, typo. Are an issue

It sounds like some people are just trying to be mean now.

DP, but I am fascinated by this claim. So your toddler was faster than you? If so, you are slower than 95% of the population, so under what circumstances were you ever walking with a slow adult other than your mother? When you get up to go to the bathroom, do you sprint? What If there is a nightmare scenario where you have to stand without moving? Like when cooking? Or stand in line for a movie ticket where you have to shuffle forward slowly?

Try reading, asshat.

Huh?

My long-legged husband complains that his short-legged wife walks too fast. And he looks like he’s galloping to keep up when we walk at my pace. It’s probably funny to watch. Occasionally he asks me why are we walking so fast but I’m not trying, it’s my normal pace. I really have to think about it to slow down under normal circumstances but I automatically will slow down when I know if someone can’t walk fast.

Once my boss was trying to catch up to me while I was walking back to the office during lunch unbeknownst to me. I got stopped at an intersection where he caught up and asked me do I always walk so fast? I replied yes unless I’m in a hurry! We both laughed.

I have been married for 47 years, and my husband has always sprinted ahead of me when out in public. I feel like a second class citizen. He is 7 inches taller than I am and very fit. At this point I am unfit. Even at the beginning of our marriage he walked ahead of me. And in a crowded setting, if I was in front of him, he would push my body through the crowd to get through faster. I am going to tell him today how this makes me feel. Suggest that we hold hands.
