Remember, the military appropriations bill hasn't been passed yet. If a government does not pay its military, that's huge. Unspeakably huge.

I tried to explain to him it's not that simple. In order for that to happen, wouldn't the govt need to reopen before 10/6 when the pay period ends in order for there to be time for pay to be processed? If this goes through next week, we'll definitely miss a paycheck (if not more). sigh.

You aren't able to miss one paycheck even knowing its coming later? Not trying to be snarky but we know we will get backpay.

It's not that we can't miss it--we can. It's just that I found his cavalier attitude about it annoying. He acted like sure they can shut down for a few days and then everyone will still get paid on time. There are definitely people out there that would be hurt by missing a paycheck or having a delayed paycheck.

Ah I see. For sure there are people who will be hurt by this.

I assume the military wasn't paid in past shutdowns? Or was the DOD always funded?

back pay is the law now. shutdowns do nothing but waste money, quite a lot of money.

basically in a shutdown congress is just pissing money into your cheerios, and then when they are done, they will tell you to eat it.

And they get paid. Congress does not miss a paycheck during shutdowns.

No, DOD was funded in 2018-2019 but not in 2013. Lots of articles about service members in harms way who were working for no pay.

me too. if I could bet on this, I would say a 5-9 day shut-down.

That’s very interesting. It’s a hopeful sign. I still say that this gets resolved before Monday.

So the bottom line is the CR McCarthy will put on the floor to “secure the border.” The “border” is the only bit of leverage the GOP has, given the polling shows an overwhelming number of voters disapprove of Biden’s performance on that issue. Will there be enough time to iron out differences before October 1? Probably not. But if not, a shut down would likely last no more than a few days, tops.

Meanwhile we have Rand Paul stating he will delay the vote on the Senate CR because of the Ukraine funding.

Maybe the amount is so small that he won’t care.

Based on the latest House briefing this am, I’m guessing there will be a shutdown.
