I've always thought the same about Randall. He wants to make his parents happy as a kid. As an adult, he wants to make his wife and kids happy and be as perfect for them as he perceives his parents were for him. |
There was a very touching episode a while back after Randall found out that Rebecca had known his bio dad all those years - where Randall & Rebecca both explored/discussed their mutual feelings about always worrying about being "enough" for one another. She confessed that she was afraid of losing him if he met his bio dad and he talked about how he felt a constant need to prove himself worthy bc he had been abandoned. It was one my fav episodes....so raw, honest and heartfelt. |
I am still upset about Rebecca not sharing Randall's bio dad's info...but I completely understand..
1.)She relied on Randall so heavily after Jack's death, she needed him to rely on her and not find support elsewhere. 2.)She didn't want Jack's memory to fade as Randall forged a relationship with his bio dad. I think Randall came around to understand this but it is so bittersweet since bio dad died so soon after they met each other. Obviously, Rebecca did not want to cause pain for Randall. She was just trying to survive the grief. |
But her decision to withhold info about his biodad was made years before the fire. By the time Jack died, she was locked in. She couldn't reveal what she knew without the much bigger risk of losing him BECAUSE she'd withheld it for so long. |
I think there a fair number of DCUM posters who live on the west coast (most are probably former DC residents but some probably just found this board through an internet search) so it's likely not all of these posts were written as late as you think they were. I'm also guessing that boards like this attrack a lot of insomniacs, mothers up in the middle of the night nursing, etc who are exhausted & therefore looking to pass some time online without exerting too much brain power ![]() |
^^^ yes, I'm one of the late night posters and I'm in Seattle (former DC, MD and VA resident). |
The 10 “rebuttal” posts (more like vigilante pp) were by the same person no doubt. |
Count me in as another poster who would like this show to get the geography right. The writers didn't have to set this in Pittsburgh & NJ, but they chose to do so. Having grown up in NJ, I can't help that the entire time, I'm like: where do they live that Randall (pre-breakdown) commutes into Manhattan by car in 30 minutes and yet they apparently are in South Jersey near Philly and Camden/Trenton (which is where Beth supposedly works). So, let's give them a little leeway and say that they live near Princeton, so that's over an hour commute each way by car into Manhattan. Manuel & Rebecca apparently also live in NJ, apparently near-ish to Randall? So let's say they also live near Princeton. Princeton-Pittsburgh is over 5 hours by car, so apparently Kevin drove 5 hours to get to that tree (and the Superbowl would be over by the time he got back to Rebecca's). The other thing is that the landscape is so clearly California. They go to the cabin and it doesn't look like anything on east coast. Daylight under the tree during Superbowl? Makes sense if the tree is in California (which is where they are filming this). Why didn't they just set the damn show in California, instead of needing us to suspend belief about where this is taking place? |
You're wrong. I'm the pp above and I'm only ressponsible for one of those posts (0327 on page 67). |
self loathing |
Actually counting, 9 posts written within about 30 minutes of 1AM ET were written by the same person. And was quite emphatic. !!! REALLY?!?! Noooo!!!! JUST STOP !! |
I know there might be some geographic discrepancies...I for one, really am annoyed when TV shows don't edit correctly.
However, there is so much richness in the stories - many which inspire me to think about my own parenting, relationship with my spouse and childhood, that I choose to focus on that. For those who want to question timeline, location, etc., maybe start a different thread? Yes, the show has some flaws. It also shows a scene 20 years in the future. That also doesn't check out either! ![]() |
NP - I don't hate Kate or blame her for Jack's death, but she does irritate me sometimes. I think she is mean to Toby - very demanding and seems to take him for granted. I mean, after that big health scare he had and after time and time again that he is patient, loving and forgiving of her - she seems very self centered in the relationship. |
We’re all just making observations, mostly favorable, some critcal, some clueless, some just asking questions and others answering. |
When people hate themselves, they are usually very mean to other people, especially people who love them. Kevin and Randall are really the only ones exempt from this, in regards to Kate. Kate hates herself a great deal - for not being as pretty and thin as her mother, but most of all for causing her father's death (in her mind). So she sabotages anything good that happens to her and can be mean to those that car about her, because deep down she doesn't think she is worth much. |
