If someone is repeatedly threatening to kill and shouting that he doesn't care abiut the consequences, is your opinion that potential victims should wait for a hit to the face or a knife or gun to be pulled out before doing anything?

Yes. Because yelling is not harmful. You cannot assault a person in the name of a future crime that has not been committed yet.

Yes. Self-defense or defense of others does not require that self or other be assaulted first. You do not need to be hit in the face first or have a knife or gun drawn first.

The victim had not assaulted anyone on that train.

Mr. Penny took the heroic action to prevent one single innocent victim that day.

We need more men who have the guts (and strength!) to protect women and children trapped with a raging, towering lunatic threatening to murder them.

There is nothing heroic whatsoever in the act of choking a person to death from behind. Completely empty of any sense of honor at all let alone heroism.

Do you care about Neely's previous victims? I guess you would say they waited too long.

Those of you who are attacking Penny are seriously misguided. Where was your outrage when all those innocent people have been attacked on the subway?

It' s like some of you just want to be self righteous about anything.

This is why people no longer help strangers. Just like that case in P hila where people on a train sat back while a woman was sexually assaulted. Is this the world
You want to live in?

If I'm the defense lawyer for this guy, I'm not doing a plea. As this thread shows, there's no way 12 jurors will all find him guilty.

Well he's just been indicted by a grand jury--which suggests that not everyone agrees with you--and his case will move forward to trial. Let's wait and see what a jury decides, shall we?

A grand jury indictment means nothing. Have you ever heard of the saying that you can indite a ham sandwich?

Why? No cheese?

Exactly that.

Wait, what? Words don't matter anymore? I thought I could assault someone by just using the wrong pronoun.

Repeatedly yelling that you are going to kill someone and don't care what happens should not mean that potential victims have to remain quiet and polite while waiting to be assaulted, raped, killed, etc.

EXACTLY. Mr. Penny deserves a medal for his courage. Everyone here knows that truth.

Daniel Penny is not alone. Now, there is Jordan Williams.

New York is creating an environment where people are not going to act to help others.

New York is creating a very dangerous environment in which they allow criminals and the severely mentally ill to walk around freely and take public transpoetation, then wait for somwthing bad to happen and blame those who try to protect themselves and others nearby.

This is totally different because the person who was killed actually assaulted someone and deserved retaliation. But somehow I don’t think everyone who donated to Penny is going to donate to this guy for some reason…

So what are your thoughts for the woman who was "socked in the face?"

I think you are wrong. Once it is publicized, I bet people will donate like crazy.
It was just created and is already up to $30,000. People recognize injustice when they see it. I also think that it is horrible that this man is currently locked up until he can make bail. This man is not a violent individual. He acted in response to an assault.
