From the article:
It would also cover “Dreamers" like Eva Santos, 32, who was brought to the U.S. by her parents at age 11 as an unauthorized immigrant, but wasn't able to vote like her friends or go to college when she turned 18. “It was really hard for me to see how my other friends were able to make decisions for their future, and I couldn’t,” said Santos, now a community organizer. More than a dozen communities across the United States currently allow noncitizens to vote, including 11 towns in Maryland and two in Vermont. Will we be seeing more of this in the DMV? Sounds like it’s mostly just for local elections anyway. https://news.yahoo.com/york-city-poised-voting-rights-061311911.html |

Takoma Park already does this.
Pretty sure DC can’t do this because it’s a Federal entity. |
|
So so important - we can make a real democracy together.
Big step by NYC; others will follow. |
| What is the big deal. They cannot vote in federal elections, but if a local jurisdiction wants to allow it, so what? |

+1 States' rights. |
Isn’t the right to vote one of the big benefits of becoming a citizen? Why give that right away so freely? |
I think you are right. The article mentions some places in Vermont where this has already passed. And in other areas. Will likely become more widespread and widely accepted. |
Why do you feel this will lead to a ‘real’ democracy? |
This. My personal feeling is that this is profoundly stupid (and, if we are willing to give up citizenship as a requirement, then what prevents one from voting in multiple jurisdictions where he is not a citizen). But it is the right of each municipality to make this decision. As long as I do not live in said municipality, I will not question it further. |
It's not hard to figure out - you're not a citizen. Want to vote? Move back to your native country. Giving illegals with mixed allegiances the right to vote is another liberal lunacy. |
They are not a citizen of the United States; but they are a citizen of that locality. Neither federal laws nor the Constitution ban non-US citizens from voting in state or local elections. California can pass a law to allow Green Card holders to vote for Governor or California legislators and that's 100% legal. The Green Card holders could NOT vote for POTUS or members of Congress (House or Senate). The states are the laboratories of democracy. |
Interesting take. You’re okay with them doing it in NYC, as long as you don’t have to live there. |
| This seems insanely stupid. There should be some rights reserved for you know, actual legal citizens of the country. |
Then amend the Constitution to not give states/localities so much leniency. |
